On this day in 2016 I launched my self-employed career. It simultaneously feels like just yesterday and forever-ago. After 5 years of working in the marketing department at flavor manufacturer FONA (now McCormick FONA), and then 3 years of working at an advertising agency, I was ready to be my own boss! About 5 years before I took the leap, I started freelancing as a side-gig to build my clientele. It wasn't until I'd built up my business enough to support myself that I quit my full-time job. Those years were a lot of work, essentially having 2 jobs—but I knew it would pay off. I know not everyone has the ability to devote all their time to building a business this way, and I feel very fortunate to have had that time. At the same time, Cris also started working on the side with me in addition to his full-time job. 3 years later, in 2019, we were not only able to support my salary, but we were able to support Cris coming into the business full time as well. Now 8 years in, I wouldn't change a thing! Being self-employed can seem a little less secure and more risky than having a traditional full-time job. But, throughout the years I've realized it can actually provide greater financial security. At any given time we're working with 5–15 clients. Losing one or two doesn't mean we lose all our income. In the wake of massive layoffs in the tech industry, we're actually more secure than many. So if you're thinking about starting your own business, you might reframe the risks that way! My greatest piece of advice that goes against typical business advice is to diversify your clientele. For example, only having clients in restaurants and hospitality would have tanked our business during COVID. There are other ways to find your niche than simply industry-specific clients. Having clients in diverse industries has kept things interesting, I've learned so much, and I've met so many amazing people along the way. I'm so grateful to all the mentors, friends, and clients who have helped me grow and helped me grow Noble Intent Studio into what it is today. Cheers to 8 years! 🎉 #WomenLead #SanDiegoBusiness
Can't wait to see what the next 8 years bring!

So inspiring. You two are really quite amazing. I have always loved working with both of you. Congratulations!
Congrats, you did well.
What a wonderful story of perseverance! Time flies when you're following your heart's path!
Congrats! And yes it comes with some short-term volatility, but much greater long-term stability when you factor in layoffs. And of course the pay isn't so bad either.
Congrats to you both!! Quite a leap of faith that turned into something profound and sustainable!
Congratulations Angela and Cris- so proud and happy for both of you… and so grateful for all the ways you helped me and the businesses I’ve been part of. Cheers to the next 8 years plus!
