Between 1997 and 2019, as a staff member of the local gas company, I led or participated in all projects to design, procure and construct natural gas connections to approximately thirty customers. The pinnacle of my achievements was the construction of the North-West Peninsular Pipeline Project in 2002, between the Cocorite Fish Market and West Mall. This was the local gas company’s first project involving horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The project was to build and commission approximately 1.6 kilometres of four-inch diameter, steel pipe. The pipeline initially supplied West Mall and the Adventist Hospital but has adequate capacity to supply numerous other customers along the Western Main Road. It was a masterpiece because the HDD technology was new to the local industry. Although the pundits were saying it could not be done, it was completed safely, within budget and is still in operation to date. The pipeline was eventually extended a further six kilometres to Diamond Vale Industrial Estate. Commissioning new gas supplies to new customers is my burning passion. Although opportunities to add more customers came in steadily to the gas company, my promotion to Assistant Manager of Engineering Services diluted my pleasures. New responsibilities to lead other unrelated projects became a distraction to me. I left the gas company in 2019 to become a consultant. In August 2024, I completed construction and commissioned my longest pipeline, connecting East Gates Mall, Trincity to a natural gas supply. That project saved the customer about three million dollars and about ten car park spaces by providing a reduced size metering facility. There were numerous issues that I had to solve, which I will share about later. My challenge now is to locate and simultaneously connect clusters of new customers to minimize cost and increase the yield of my effort. At the top of my bucket list is to build a natural gas pipeline into Ariapita Avenue to supply low pressure gas to all the restaurants.
