They say you should never meet your heroes. I disagree.     A few years ago, I was working behind the scenes at a book launch in North Carolina. I was excited to get to help out but, in all honesty, I was most excited to get to meet Marie Forleo, an author whose book Everything is Figureoutable, had really inspired me.   Before I read Marie’s book, I had never heard anyone speak to the fact that no matter what happens, no matter how wrong things go, you can get out of almost any situation. It changed my perspective on so much and helped me grow as a person.   Marie was speaking at the event which meant I got to meet her backstage. At one point, it was just the two of us, and I was grappling with whether it would be professional to express how much of an impact her work had on me.   Eventually, I decided it might be okay to put myself out there.   “I’m sorry if it’s unprofessional for me to do this,” I said. “But can I just take a moment and tell you what an impact your book made on my life?”   “Mark,” she replied. “Never be afraid to approach someone who has put their work out into the world and share with them what an impact it had on you.”   Her spoken words have clearly moved me as much as her written ones.   Since that day, I’ve decided I’ll always try my best to connect with the people who’ve impacted my life and tell them how much it means to me.   Even though “big names” might seem too cool for school, people want to know that the work they've done in their office, silently, day after day, has helped someone in some way, big or small.   Not all heroes wear capes. But they do all deserve to be recognized for the ways they’ve helped us learn, grow, and become heroes in our own right. #networking #leadershipjourney #professionalgrowth

My study group recently read Adam Grant's book Hidden Potential (Highly Recommend!) and I love what he says here: “The ultimate mark of potential is not the height of the peak you’ve reached, but the distance you traveled.” He’s asking us to look at success in terms of PROGRESS not just what we’ve accomplished or where we are now. Many of us aren’t happy where we are in life physically, financially, career-wise, etc., likely because we are comparing ourselves to others instead of celebrating the progress we’ve made along the way. Instead of comparing ourselves to others (who likely haven’t traveled the same path or faced the same obstacles), what if we focused on comparing who we are today to who we used to be? Next year we strive to be in a better place than we were this year. Moving forward we strive to continue growing and getting better to be the best version of ourselves. #HiddenPotential #Comparison #Progress #RedefineSuccess
