I highly recommend a recent episode on Andy Stanley’s Leadership Podcast where he interviews Adam Grant on the topic of hidden potential. Based on Adam’s latest book, Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things, they discuss a number of keen insights. A few I found intriguing were: · Mentors who are a few years ahead of you rather than established leaders of your field are often more helpful since they better remember what it was like when they were in your shoes and see things you don’t see yet. · When seeking feedback, the better question to ask is “what can I do better?” vs. “how did I do?” – it’s more helpful to be future looking, understanding specific changes to improve, rather than beating up past performance. · The role that character development plays in the process of uncovering hidden potential – “Becoming a creature of discomfort can unlock hidden potential”, “summoning the nerve to face discomfort is a character skill.” #leadership #AndyStanley #AdamGrantHiddenPotential https://lnkd.in/eWdEf4hh

Have you heard of the Peter (or Petra) Principle? What happens when someone is promoted to the point of incompetence? In the latest episode of our #OrdinaryExtraordinary #Leaders podcast, Mike Hickman explains why this isn’t necessarily a bad thing with the right support to help leaders grow. He explains that, if you are conscious of what it is you can’t do, if you’re conscious of your incompetence, it just means you don’t know how to do something yet, and with the right development, you’ll be able to progress in the next phase of your career. It's certainly an insight that can really help if you're starting out in a new role! He goes into much more detail in this 15 minute podcast, so why not have a listen? ➡️https://ow.ly/9K7f50Rf81E And don't forget that our upcoming leadership conference on 22 May in Harrogate is as much for new and aspiring leaders as it is for more experienced colleagues. It will be as relevant to someone leading a small team or project as it is to someone leading a department or organisation. Do It Now "I just don't have time" One day, this will be true... From a business perspective, the statement above and "I'm too busy" is what I'm hearing more frequently than ever before. ↳The cost of this: 1. Great opportunities are being missed 2. People are overworked and stressed 3. Average work is being delivered 4. Money is being left on the table 5. Priorities are out the window ↳The focus needs to shift to: 1. Value your worth 2. Say 'no' to things that drain time and energy 3. Start making decisions that move you toward your vision 4. Let go of 'this could lead to something bigger' How often does it? 5. Instead of juggling 10 things, concentrate on the one that truly matters Let's create environments where we can create great work, with teams that are proud and happy to deliver excellence. If you want to be inspired by someone who has lived true to the statement below, I highly recommend you tune into our latest Courageous Leaders Podcast episode with Nishma Patel Robb 🪩⚡️. Is being #responsible the same thing as being #accountable? Research suggests these are quite different mindsets. Being accountable means you are answerable and willing to accept the outcomes or results of a project or activity. But responsibility goes much further. It is the mindset that says, “I am the person who must make this happen,” whether it stems from your belief or because your job requires this of you, or there is some social force binding you to this obligation. ✨ According to recent research, responsibility shapes career success for leaders. 🌟 💡 Interesting learnings from a Podcast I've been enjoying - The 90th Percentile: An Unconventional Leadership Podcast. https://lnkd.in/gHFQDY_K
