Early yesterday morning, Los Angeles experienced a 3.6 magnitude earthquake, possibly an aftershock of Thursday’s 4.7 quake. According to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), the number of earthquakes has exceeded the long-term average over a dozen times in the last 40-50 years, with a noticeable increase in activity. Interestingly, there’s also been a rise in earthquakes on the East Coast, like the small one felt in South Carolina on Sunday, compared to previous years. While we don’t have technology that can give us early warnings for these powerful natural events, the best approach is to prepare in advance and know how to protect yourself if a larger one occurs. Here's how to get ready: 1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On: When the ground starts shaking, drop to your hands and knees, take cover under sturdy furniture like a table, and hold on until the shaking stops. 2. Secure Heavy Items: Bolt down heavy furniture, like bookshelves and cabinets, to prevent them from tipping over during a quake. 3. Know Your Safe Zones: Identify the safest spots in each room, away from windows and heavy objects that could fall. If you’re outside, move to an open area away from buildings, streetlights, and power lines. 4. Have an Emergency Kit: Prepare a kit with essentials like water, food, medications, flashlights, and a first aid kit. Keep it in an accessible place. 5. Create a Family Plan: Make sure everyone knows where to meet and how to communicate if you’re separated. 6.
