Donning firefighter gear adds around 50-70 pounds (23-31 kg)! Installing a fire sprinkler system is a practical way to keep people and firefighters safe from the risks of fires. Reports show that civilian fire death and injury rates are lower when fire sprinkler systems are present compared to reported fires in structures with no AES, and the rate of firefighter injuries was also lower when sprinklers were present.

I find the NFPA Report on Line of Duty Deaths to be woefully insufficient in helping the fire service understand LODD and in affecting necessary cultural change that values and optimizes human performance. While the reports does offer some interesting statistics, it falls short in asking the right questions to analyze the causal factors for these deaths. Questions like assessing training proficiency, identifying stress patterns pre-call, and evaluating critical factors during the incident are essential for a holistic understanding. This certaintly underrepresents the total number of fatalities. NIOSH reports that firefighters have a cancer fatality rate of 14% higher then the general population. The cancer fatality rate for the general population is 158.3/100K. There are approx 1.1 million career and volunteer firefighters in the US. That means that over the average rate of cancer fatalities 244 more firefighters die each year than average. A National Fallen Firefighters white paper reports the suicide rate of first responders is 18/100K versus 13/100K of the general public. That means there are 55 additional firefighter fatalities. Just those two sources add 299 deaths a year. By getting these two numbers down to the national average we would save the lives of nearly 300 firefighters every year. These numbers should be included if we want to be honest with ourselves.
