Democracy - what Democracy? “The tyranny of the majority.” John Adams. Thomas Jefferson purportedly claimed that democracy can often resemble mob rule, and in the case of America’s current political sphere, this saying has a ring of truth. According to a 2022 Pew survey, only 32% of American adults felt that the two primary political parties adequately align with their views. That means that an overwhelming majority of Americans (200 million) are not happy with the current government and election process. To become truly democratic, the US political system must reform. As Robin Williams said: ''Politicians should wear jackets like Nascar drivers, then we would know who owns them.'' A profound statement and reality. The US public is finally waking up to the realities of its corrupted government. To make matters worse, the champions of these polarizing elections are then indebted to the rich who funded their campaigns, rather than to the constituents they were elected to represent. From the outset, the two-party system was condemned at the highest level. “The alternate domination of one faction over another…is itself a frightful despotism,” warned the first U.S. president - George Washington. In recent decades, tensions and violence have risen across the country. Both parties continue to adopt harmful and legal tactics, in an attempt to cut the other down and gain supremacy. The American public suffers as a result. With the 2024 Presidential Elections around the corner, in excess of $2billion has been spent on campaigning. That money will ultimately be at the cost of the Trickle Down Economy via Tax Deductible Donations, aka, heavily disguised lobbying/gambling. Make no mistake, the U.S. Presidential Elections have been tampered with and abused for many years - not always by external regimes and adversaries - but those much closer to home. There's too much riding on it and its got nothing to do with Democracy but Control, Power, and Greed. Let me put this into perspective. In 2023 $842 billion was allocated to the DoD. That is $2.3 billion per day. If we are to believe the widely published figure of over $10 trillion costs and losses to cyber crime - equivalent to around $28 billion per day. Is it any wonder we have seen a major move by the MIC into the major protagonists of the Cyber World... Little to no attribution, very few taxables, and lack of defence across the board. That's Democracy for you.

In 2021, the US military spent a whopping  $801 billion while its top adversaries, China, Russia and Iran, spent $293 billion, $65.9 billion, and $24.6 billion respectively. Thus, the US spent more than double on its military than the combined spendings of its global competitors.  Many organisations, well three predominantly made a killing, literally on the MIC spend.

This article was very insightful for me personally! At the heart of the problem is a lack of education regarding the concerns this article point out. I am old enough to remember the requirement, at the high school level, to take a "Civics" class. The problem was that class never centered on many of the points of this article and, a a result, I took the position, "I am not going to be forced to make a choice between two bad choices, so I will not vote." What is even worse today, is that the "Civics" class is not even offered in most educational environments which only further diminishes the knowledge of the majority. This lack of knowledge is makes the current misinformation/disinformation performed by the political parties an even greater threat to the Constitution and the long term existence of this country. We hear about "Make America Great Again" but I would say, "America has always been great" because of the Constitution and not because of any political party. Whoever will govern (i.e., do the right thing for the country) according to the Constitution will be the candidate who maintains that greatness. That candidate, in my opinion, is not in the current two party system!

Good historical context! That's why the United States was established as a Republic, in order to avoid the tyranny of the majority. But one side is not happy with this particular detail. They constantly message about how "our precious democracy is in peril" but we never hear them speak about the Republic as founded. In fact, they explicitly state they want to abolish several fundamental elements of the Constitution. I wonder why?

One also has to remember at the time of this quote that Communism was not a concept that any nation in the world of any effect practiced, however this is a true concept in the sense of the ability of the masses the people to affect change in those that "lead" thanks Andy Jenkinson

You raise important points about the disconnect between the American public and the political system. To move toward a true democracy, we need to advocate for reforms that prioritise campaign finance transparency and encourage diverse political voices beyond the two-party system. Thank you Andy as always for push for a system that values accountability and genuine representation over power and greed.
