Marketers place a lot of value on the ideas within ad campaigns. But they often forget that an idea is only as good as the way it's expressed. 'Some of our customers share names with celebrities.' This one idea underpins the ads from Surreal & Suddenly Fragrances (Lidl's own brand), yet the two resonate differently. Similarly, the Spotify & Sainsbury’s campaigns are based on the simple idea that people have funny habits. But the different creative styles mean that Spotify’s (I’d argue) is more powerful. This isn’t to diminish the importance of ideas, and the need for making them interesting and relevant to our audience. But it’s craft that transforms a straightforward idea into a memorable story.
