Making better decisions. One of my favorite topics. I have the pleasure of speaking at EMCases Summit today on decision making under pressure. Having a suite of tactics to enhance your decisions is key. Here are the Elite 8 Decision Making Tactics that can be used across all high-stakes industries: 1. Apply rules for predictable decisions in advance 2. Sign post decisions with objective criteria to mitigate sunk cost fallacy 3. Use explicit probabilities for possible outcomes 4. Set a time and force yourself to consider additional options 5. Simplify the situation by summarizing the relevant information 6. Treat decisions as a skill that can be improved upon over time 7. Debrief with your team not only the outcome but also the process 8. Perform a pre-mortem - assume the plan failed and develop a strategy to manage potential failure

Is gut instinct clouding your decision making? Cognitive biases can often lead to flawed judgments based on incomplete information. Our brains naturally look for quick links and simple causal explanations – but these can prove too easy to be true. To overcome these biases, competitive intelligence plays a vital role. By systematically benchmarking competitors with objective fact finding and regular updates (rather than a once-off exercise), leaders can make more informed decisions grounded in facts rather than intuition. Competitor Benchmarking, done right, is a powerful tool to keep our brains honest and our business strategies sharper. https://lnkd.in/eyc8YT_A #cognitivebias #competitorbenchmarking

Metrics are key to decision making. But they can also bog you down. Over reliance on them can cause vanity metrics, red herrings, or irrelevant data to get in the way of effective action. Focus on that which you can actually control and influence: the rest might be doing more harm than good to your decision making process.
