Every now and then, we all need someone to bet on our potential... Luckily, I was given that chance back in 2010. I was doing my first role out of college as a field sales representative covering 6 Home Depot stores in Orlando, FL. Not the most glamorous stocking shelves, putting up literature, and selling in the aisles.... but it taught you about the brands, how Home Depot operates, and the end user which was crucial. I was proactive and befriended a local high-flyer in the company, Mike Heist, and built some rapport. When an opportunity for a promotion came up, I wasn't at the top of the list. But since I was bold networking within the company I got a shot. I had a 2 hour heads up and drove straight there with little time to prep. Ended up interviewing with Mike and another sales leader, Daniel Jonke (pictured above). Was definitely nervous, fumbled at times, but did a good enough job to get the offer. I feel pretty confident I wouldn't be where I'm at now if I wouldn't have gotten that first promotion at Milwaukee Tool/TTi. Appreciate Mike, Daniel, and the entire regional team that ended up hiring me to come on board. Came full circle recently when I reconnected with Daniel at an event 14 years later. The lesson here is you always will need someone to throw you a bone to really break out in your career, you need to be proactive with networking, and do hard things on purpose so your prepared when you get a shot! 💪🏼💪🏼 #mindset #sales #habits

When I left retail life as a Gm overseeing a 5k sq store with 26 employees under me working 12 hours 6 days a week….i told myself im never ever going back to a management unless i can truly find work/life balance for once in my life. Here I am after many years as a manager at my current company, I don’t always refer myself as a manager when I call customers for my reps, I don’t need to mention my title to get my work done nor it has typical meaning to me when it come to a group effort. A position do not mean any success to me, effort and willingness does. I was always curious to see how I can make an impact on people. The way we are recognized is when you are number 1 on quota, or number 1 on revenue and so on. I decided to find what each individual is good at compared to others and cheered/challenged on other things they were lacking on…..and outcome was amazing. For all those people out there, if you think you are not good at what you do, or feel pressure because you feel that someone else is outshining you. Just remember, there’s always something that you do well better than anyone and I truly hope your direct manager see that and tell you that ! Instead of asking your employee “ why can’t you do this ? “ Try asking “ hey you are so good at doing this, i appreciate what you do everyday. Now this is another area we are trying to tackle on, can you help me ? “ I’m taking my team to the moon !

Lessons I learned from working 10+ years in retail: ➡️ No task is above or below Selling was my primary job, but that didn’t mean there weren’t other tasks that came with the shift. Everyone pitched in, no matter their seniority. Our manager cleaned the bathroom during her week on the chart, everyone took turns with the recycling, and credit was always given to teammates who helped with big customer purchases. And that applied to the benefits, too—like opportunities to work in other cities, join conference calls, and help with sales planning. We were a small team, but the lesson that stuck with me was this: it's important to know your individual role, but it's also important to balance that with being a good team member. #LessonsILearnedFromRetail

Recognition...is a key motivator. ...is deserved for a job well done. Some may say, one gets paid for doing a job, but that "good job" or extra thank you can go a long way in building trust, and loyalty among your team. We have had several conversations around our disappointment in our in-store experiences throughout 2024. Walter Holbrook did an excellent job of recapping the state of store experiences and inventory levels in a recent post. I'm here to give kuddos to DICK'S Sporting Goods. No matter what store we are in the service is excellent. Today we were in the West Nyack, NY location at the Palisades Mall looking for a new T-Ball bat. Julio came over, and brought us to the right section, but that was just the beginning. He gave us a few tips on how to look for the right size. He showed my son a couple tests to make sure he got the right one and stayed with us until he was satisfied. It's hard to retain knowledgeable talent. Kuddos DICK'S Sporting Goods for finding Julio! He was great with my son. He even wanted to look for a new glove even though he knew he didn't need one 🤣 Is there anyone in your recent travels that deserves a shout out? Lessons I learned from working 10+ years in retail: ➡️ How to align your team—daily In ten years, I worked at four different retail brands and each one had their own version of a daily kick-off that all employees would read / participate in at the start of their shift (no matter what time their shift started). The more well-known the brand, the more focused these daily kick-offs were. At the largest retailer I worked for, a manager would actually host the kick-off for each team starting their shift. It was a great way to remind the team of the brand's ethos, daily goals (sales or other) and updates to products or promotions while also connecting us as teammates. These daily huddles were how I got to know my retail peers. TL;DR: Start your day with people. Align on the goals and reset your expectations. #Retail

Getting your product to your consumer! Day 3 Hosted by Marks and Spencer at their Marble Arch store - things got very real! Kicking us off was Lauren Mallon bringing real energy and honesty in sharing her career journey - important theme being just how far attitude takes you in unlocking breadth & experiences. Hantian Wang brilliantly brought to life the magic of range & spacing - how to stand out and insight into what your customers (Buyer) are prioritising. Our teams were joined by some outstanding graduates Niamh Timpson Hannah Connolly Gregor Munro Millie Stewart who took our teams to stake out different channels (Stores, Restaurants, Pubs etc.). Prompted some excellent thinking around the right channels for the right brands. This is part of the magic of the industry: it's so very relatable and the deeper you dive, the more interesting it becomes. Our delegates felt the same - teams were getting strategic about who was staying/who was going: there's some tension brewing with laptops being slammed shut as soon as anyone who isn't in your team approaches! A huge thank you to the team Marks and Spencer for a brilliant and thoughtful experience - particularly Becky Cock who took the reins mid-way through and delivered such a cracking day. CAREER POST: Know Bunnings, IHG, Natbuild? Are joint business reviews and strategic customer partnerships in this channel your jam? Understand the buying groups and their priorities in procurement decisions? We should chat. Senior leadership roles with large Aussie manufacturers don't come around very often. Roles that have a direct impact on whether customers stop en route to their Bunnings sausage sizzle, even less so. Ultimately, I'm gunning for an Expert in People - internally you know how to lead people and engage your team in best practice, externally you know how to make your hardware retail channel partners successful. Melburnians are an obvious fit given customer HQ proximity but proven success in this channel will trump location.
