Wine Australia supporting AWRI - What a Load of Bulldust Part 2 Martin Cole talks about co-funding to conduct research and wants #AWRI to ‘sing for its supper’ via a competitive tender process for research. In other words, collaborate with commercial entities to conduct important research that will place Australian Wine at the forefront of innovation. Does it sound idiotic? A commercial entity gets first access to innovative research and then uses that information for their own competitive advantage.  The Australian wine producer (the Levy payer) and the Australian wine industry becomes a follower not a leader in science and innovation. Is that a waste of our levies? Sure is. Is this something akin to the scandal engulfing Price Waterhouse Cooper? Could be. Should the chair and CEO stand down? Probably. Should Julie Collins step in and fix this? Absolutely. The Australian wine industry success is underpinned by the work conducted at AWRI. Wine Australia’s campaign (via the chair and CEO) to undermine AWRI is damaging our industry. Julie Collins welcome to the Australian wine industry led by an organisation that lacks industry representation on its board and whose chair and CEO are more interested in their own agendas rather than the industry that pays their salary.

🍇 Wine Australia Welcomes New Board Members as Sector Faces Critical Challenges 🍷 As of 1 October, five new non-executive directors have joined Wine Australia’s board, appointed by the Albanese Government after an extensive selection process. The new appointees—Dr Angeline Achariya, Roslyn Baker, Andrew Kay, Elizabeth Riley, and Peta Slack-Smith—will serve alongside Chair Dr Michele Allan AO for a three-year term. Minister for Agriculture, Julie Collins, emphasised the collective expertise of the new board, noting their capacity to drive profitability, resilience, and sustainability in Australia's wine sector. 🌱 Australian Grape & Wine, which appointed the independent selection committee, expressed confidence in the new board's ability to guide the sector through its current challenges. CEO Lee McLean highlighted the importance of collaboration between Wine Australia and the industry body to ensure the success of the recently launched One Grape & Wine Sector Plan. With six urgent priorities outlined for completion by June 2024, the new board members are expected to play a critical role in steering the sector forward. 🚀 The incoming board will also be responsible for the 2025 Wine Australia strategic plan, which seeks to address commercial, technical, and environmental challenges. ❓Quiz question: Where did #Guinness build its very first brewery outside the British Isles? If you want to find out, you might want to read our new article in Management & Organisational History (or look at the below abstract 😉), where we explore how the decision to brew #Guinness Stout outside the British Isles in the 1960s came about. Not least, Sir Alan Lennox-Boyd, the then Managing Director of Guinness, was a key player in this decision. So we are looking at the story from the perspective of upper echelons theory, where such strategic decisions are (partly) attributed to the top managers in charge. This makes sense, not least because Sir Lennox-Boyd was British Colonial Secretary before becoming Guinness' Managing Director. However, Guinness' #accountants also played a role in this decision. They helped to change the original decision to bottle Guinness in the respective location in favour of building a brewery. We interpret this role of management #accounting information as an important but understudied moderator in the upper echelons theory of the relationship between top management characteristics and strategic decisions.
