I want to tell you about my very first freelance writing contract. Back in 2020, I was just starting out in the freelance world. A marketing company, after seeing my writing samples, asked me to write 7 blog posts about windows. That's all the direction they gave me. No specific topic, no pain points, no target audience.....just windows. So I said, "Absolutely!" I knew nothing about windows other than how to look through them or give them a lazy clean with Windex, but it was a real paid writing opportunity for $35 per article. I brainstormed as much as I could for interesting articles about windows. When I had exhausted all of the brainpower (and coffee) I had, I counted my article ideas. Crap, that's only 5. How the hell can I write SEVEN articles about windows? As it does sometimes, a burst of creativity came to me and I was able to drum up two more topics to cover: How do those interrogation room, one-way mirror windows work? and, What is life like for a high-rise window cleaner? Not bad, right? 😜 I wrote the articles, submitted them to the client, and prayed that they wouldn't come back to me saying this is crap, we never should've hired you. (The usual self-doubt that writers are too good at). A few days later, an email from them arrived in my inbox that said, "Andrew, your window articles are fantastic. Can you do 7 more?" Are you kidding!? Seven more!? Okay 🙂 I'll do it. I tell this story because I was talking with a company the other day about a potential engagement for their sustainable window innovation and it reminded me about the first time I wrote about windows. A lot has changed since then, but it did teach me some valuable lessons. You have to do heavy research before writing about a topic, and if I can write 14 articles about windows, I can find interesting stories for just about anything. Anyone else have a fun 'first contract' story? For anyone interested, here's that article on how one-way mirrors work. https://lnkd.in/dkhW4C7J

Writing Copy? Think of It Like Building a House—You Can’t Skip the Foundation. Imagine deciding to build your dream house. You have got the plans ready, you’re excited about the colors, the decor, even the furniture. But there’s one tiny detail you skip laying a solid foundation. It sounds ridiculous, right? Without that base, everything else would fall apart sooner or later. Writing a copy is a lot like building that house. The foundation is not flashy, but the most crucial part is knowing your customer inside out. What do they really need? What keeps them up at night? What words will make them feel seen, heard, and understood? When we skip this foundational work and jump straight to the “decorating” stage—fancy phrases, catchy taglines, and clever wordplay—the copy might look good on the surface, but it won’t last. It’s like building those walls without the base: the words might grab attention for a second, but without connecting to real customer needs, it will fade just as fast. Strong copy digs deep. It shows the reader that you get them, that this isn’t just another ad, but something speaking to their situation, their goals, their life. And when you’ve got that foundation right, everything you build on top—every word, every headline, every call to action—stands tall and resonates. So, next time you’re writing copy, remember to lay the foundation first. Dive into the customer’s world before you start crafting the words. The more grounded you are in what they truly want, the more your message will stand strong and be something they can’t ignore. Have you ever had a project go sideways because you skipped a step? What happened? Whether it’s building, cooking, or writing, let’s talk about why the foundation always matters.

Editing tip of the day Re: Characterization through setting Imagine your 2 main characters are approaching a building. A castle. In the middle of a desert. The first character focuses on how the tall spires block the sun and create shade for birds and lizards running from the heat. They wonder how many people live there or could possibly live there. The walls seem thick and sturdy, well-seasoned protection that has had years of experience. The length of the building denotes dining halls. Multiple. Kitchens, office rooms, libraries, courtyards and more. How many have occupied this space in the past? Is it even habitable anymore? The second main character immediately notices the wear and tear of every brick. Dust seems to be crumbling from the walls constantly, giving the whole structure an eerie, unsafe feeling. Everything about the building is tinted a muted gray, even the tattered flags hanging from poles and the drawbridge with finger-width spaces between every plank. What was once brown and crisp is now tired and softened. The character wonders: is it even habitable anymore? When building your characters, every choice you make regarding the clothes they wear down to how they describe a leaf on the ground adds depth. By focusing on how a character would describe something, you tell your reader so much about the person you've created: what they appreciate, what they're wary of, the first and last things they notice, etc. And describing something through the eyes of a character, or a few characters, does the work of establishing mood and setting before you even get there. Next time you describe something, try writing the description from different POVs and see what you learn from it. You might find that the simple object or place or whatever you're writing about is actually chock-full of layers and details that you weren't aware of yet. Happy writing! #creativewriting #storytelling #editing #shortstories #characterization #maincharacters #writer #editor

Freelance writers, is there anything they can’t do? Researching, questioning, testing and writing up the sum total of their findings in a manner that perfectly fits and appeals to the demanding demographic of whichever publication or client they are currently engaged in employment with, it would seem not! But give pause, enthusiastic eye-user. Surely there are some subject matters that even the most talented of freelance scribes struggle to transform from mere seeds of thought into blooming bouquets of word-based infoentertainment? Well, I can’t speak for others of my available for hire ilk, but here’s ‘Best Laser Levels’, a review round-up of those lighty-up wotnots that you can use to thingamajig that stuff otherwise left on the wonk. By me, for the The London Standard, proving beyond a shadow of the first inkling of the suspicion of a doubt, that I can review absolutely anything… #tools #diy #laserlevel #freelanceforhire #reviews #journalism #freelancewriter #freelanceeditor
