In Washington- Drivers are required to move over a lane or slow down at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit when approaching a law enforcement, emergency, construction, transportation, utility vehicle, tow truck, or other work response vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the road. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $1,000. Penalties increase for incidents that seriously injure or kill another person. These fines cannot be waived, reduced, or suspended. RCW 46.61.212 Per state law, motorists approaching an emergency zone or a work zone are required to move over one lane, if possible, or slow down by at least 10 miles per hour (mph) below the posted speed limit. An emergency or work zone includes the 200 feet of roadway prior to and after the incident or area of work.
