Wrexham AFC owners and hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have purchased a minority stake in Mexican top-flight side Club Necaxa. McElhenney and Reynolds will join other high-profile minority investors such as Eva Longoria, Odell Beckham Jr., Mesut Özil and more. It is common knowledge that since the Wrexham takeover in 2020, the hollywood actors have managed to do the unthinkable in North Wales. By earning back to back promotions getting the side to League One for the first time since 2005 and bringing global interest to the city, they know how to change the trajectory of a sports club very quickly. The roles for the McElhenney and Reynolds at Club Necaxa are currently unclear at the moment but with how well they’ve done at Wrexham, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the current owners of the Mexican side look to use their profile, influence and contacts to revamp the brand of the club. Club Necaxa are currently 50 per cent owner by an investment group led by Al Tylis and Sam Porter. My question in response to this, as to all attempts to 'grow the brand in international markets' is why? What's the purpose in growth? What is it seeking to achieve? Does it affect the actual service, product or in this case, club on the ground? Why should the will of those who enable those who run clubs to even consider such a step, bend to the will of investors who are seeking to make money? I don't oppose growth, but I am always curious why things like opening offices in North America, which has its own football competitions, is deemed such an important element of a football club. In short, be a sceptic, always. Ask why. If it can be justified, and balanced with the wider aims/objectives of the club and its stakeholders, fine. If not, don't complain that it's just a minority because it sounds too much like you can't bear opposition to your ideas. Maybe, and here's a novel idea, go away and rethink your strategy, find a better way through. In contrast, sports investors have historically lacked regular and reliable pricing data with which to assess their performance. In creating the Ross Arctos Sports Franchise Index (#RASFI), we believe that we have built one of the first purely data-driven sports franchise benchmarks. When measuring #alpha in a closed system like North American Big 4 transactions, alpha will always sum to zero across all transactions, but we believe the variance of alpha outcomes across transactions can be quite informative. American Dan Friedkin’s The Friedkin Group (TFG) has seemingly outmaneuvered American John Textor’s Eagle Football Holdings Ltd. Holdings for control of Everton Football Club. The deal remains subject to regulatory approval. Months before Friedkin emerged as a bidder, outgoing club owner Farhad Moshiri came to terms with a third American investment group, 777 Partners. That company was unable to close due to widely reported legal and financial challenges. The heavy American presence in Everton negotiations (MSP Capital was also reportedly engaged in exclusive talks with Moshiri at one point) is reflective of a broader trend–U.S. investors and/or investment firms investing in European sports assets. Eight of 20 English Premier League clubs are now controlled by Americans (it’ll be nine when this deal closes). Two others have Americans as LPs. The Americanization of European sport began in 2003 when the late Malcolm Glazer bought a 2.9% stake in Manchester United for £9mm. Two years later, the Glazer family executed a leveraged buyout to secure the balance of the club for £790mm (£600mm of which was reportedly borrowed against team assets). The logic amongst those who followed was clubs in Europe could be acquired on the cheap given that they are often heavily levered and under-commercialized. While European sport undoubtedly provides savvy investors with upside potential, investments on the continent come with nuanced risk that may not be understood by foreigners. There is over-spending abound, and cultural differences make it difficult to replicate the familiar American operational playbook. “Sport in Europe has historically been more about winning than profits,” one senior executive at a major global bank said. And that “point of view is not usually aligned with U.S. private equity’s expectations which are to prioritize profits.” Americans investing overseas ought to beware.
