When I moved back to Australia, I had explored 3 options regarding my career: 1. Look for roles within Amazon. 2. Look for roles outside of Amazon. 3. Use that energy doing either 1. or 2. to start my own company. I chose option 3. I'm not gonna lie, I stepped into pretty quiet tech market compared to the one I left in 2020 (when I transitioned from AWS to Ops) and there were many moments where I went "what have I done!?!" but 7 months later, I have zero regrets. My sole focus has been to bring customer-centricity to every interaction whether they be my candidates or my clients and to build a business doing recruitment how I like to do it: ☑ Prioritising customer-experience ☑ Building trust ☑ Investing in customer relationships for the long term ☑ Removing friction It's been an amazing ride and I'm so grateful to absolutely everyone who has gone on this journey with me. #recruitment #talentacquisition #ucentric

✨ 3 years at Amazon! (and still trying to explain my family what I actually do! 😁) It’s been a journey filled with growth, challenges, and lots of learning. Layoffs in big tech dominated the business headlines in 2023. But for many affected companies, those cuts represented minor corrections after a decade-long hiring spree. Those same companies simultaneously made huge investments in equipment, property, and R&D—also known as capital expenditures. These twin surges reflect the enormous investments in hardware, software, and engineering talent demanded by cloud services—and made more urgent by the rise of AI. (Real estate is a major “capex” factor, too, especially for Intel’s new chip factories and Amazon’s ever-expanding warehouse network.) The takeaway: For now, staying ahead at tech’s top levels requires major commitments to equipment and talent alike. Trying to reach Amazon Senior Engineer burned me out and (almost) broke my spirit. Here’s what I did to get back on track. After joining Amazon, I spent four intense years working toward my Senior Sofware Engineer promotion. But, when I finally found the right project, there was a catch: It was massively delayed, leaving me one month to launch it from scratch. So, I threw myself into the work. → Powering through stress → Burning through weekends → Pushing my team to their limit It was intense, but we hit our deadline. Our director was impressed.  I was exhausted but relieved. Then, the next promotion cycle arrived—and I was in for a shock: 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻. I was crushed by anger, disappointment and frustration.  Another year of relentless effort, wasted. 𝗠𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁. But, I couldn’t. I was physically and mentally drained and leaving meant taking a pay cut somewhere else. So I took a step back and made three key decisions to rebalance my life: 1. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 – I went on an extended vacation to disconnect and breathe. It gave me the space to reassess.     2. 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 – I’d lost faith in my org supporting my career goals, so I found a new project (Alexa) that reignited my passion for my work.     3. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻s – I extended my mental timeline for promotion, recognizing that success isn’t always a straight line. Doing this gave me a fresh perspective. I saw that I’d tied my career goals too closely to my self-worth, ignoring my own boundaries in the process. Taking off the pressure helped me rebalance my life and feel more in control of my career. Eight months later, I got my promotion. It can be scary to step back in your career. But sometimes, the best way forward is to pause, reset, and pivot to a path that renews your passion and fuels lasting growth. —- Hi, I’m Roman 👋.
