Back in 2014 a retired head of US Special Forces, Admiral William H McRaven (who had been a Navy Seal for thirty-seven years and who ran the operation that sought out and killed Osama bin Laden), gave a graduation address at the University of Texas. Among other things, he exhorted students to think about their bed linen. “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed,” he suggested. “The little things in life matter. If you cannot do the little things in life right, you cannot do the big things right.” His advice about bed-making went viral; the video of his speech was quickly viewed over ten million times, and his book, written as a result, topped the New York Times best sellers list. https://lnkd.in/ggyGM7fs Now, eight years later, McRaven still gets dozens of letters and emails about his speech and book. “I find it amusing that when people stop me on the street, many of them have no idea I was even in the military. All they know is that I told them to make their bed” he laughs. I repeat it to encourage you to follow the McDonald’s lead in your in-company training: keep it straightforward, simple and personal if you want it to be remembered. John graduated from a Service Academy in the mid 2000’s. Over the next few years, he flew ISR missions both over and around unfriendly regions. Soon after his commitment was up, he resigned from the service and found a job at a great company and built a career for himself there. Prior to his 40th birthday, John called me. He loved his job but . . . he still had an itch to fly. And his kids in middle school played sports (which he coached . . . when he was in town) and he was anxious about paying for college. And although he progressed steadily, he also felt like a lot of his peers were being "priced out" of their jobs. So we discussed his goals, his background, HIS family’s future. He wanted to know how much money did he need to start a business? (Surprisingly, not as much as he thought – all those years of paying bills on time had resulted in a stellar credit score that the SBA was eager to reward). Was it possible for him to run a business as a “side gig”? (many are structured just so). What could he make in a business like this? (We set him up to speak with current owners that could answer that question to a T).
