Should young, emerging startups remain such organizations forever, or should they gradually transform into serious and organized enterprises? Should #DesktopMetal, #Markforged, #Velo3D, and #Nexa3D follow the same path that 3D Systems, Stratasys, EOS, and Materialise did 30 years ago? Is this still just as good and beneficial a strategy? Why is #Formlabs, which was founded around the same time as #MakerBot and #Ultimaker, in a completely different position? In fact, it is even better off than publicly traded companies like Desktop Metal, Markforged, and Velo3D. I encourage you to read the article that raises all these issues. It is a continuation of my well-known piece on 3DPrint.com - “Rescuing the Additive Industry: The Straight Edge 3D Printing Manifesto.” (https://lnkd.in/dVrkejHB) It is behind a paywall. ***Perfect prototype, but not fit for mass production!!*** 1. Some of my lab prototypes were developed using additive manufacturing technology (3D printing). 2. Similarly, some of the sensors were also manually crafted using various types of filter papers and membranes. 3. Design for these sensors and readouts were done using AutoCAD or Autodesk. 4. The irony was that while designing a batch manufacturing unit, I discovered that the sensor manufacturing process adopted for the proof of concept (PoC) establishment was not scalable for mass production. 5. Similarly, adapting the readout design specification for large-scale production presented challenges due to the intricate processes required for manufacturing and assembly. 6. The transition from lab prototype to product development demands the highest standards of design, ensuring that assay performance is not compromised. 7. Here, one of the biggest challenges is maintaining the accuracy and effectiveness of the test throughout this transformation.
