In May 1989, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) celebrated the ratification of their first collective bargaining agreement. This landmark contract, approved by a decisive 84 percent of union members, marked a significant turning point as the first time a union representing air traffic controllers and the FAA reached a collective bargaining agreement after the PATCO strike and subsequent decertification. Key provisions included mandatory breaks, immunity for reporting errors, and involvement in NTSB investigations, establishing a framework for improved working conditions and stronger union representation. NATCA also successfully bargained regional representatives 50 percent official time off to conduct union representational duties. The foundations laid by the dedicated NATCA founders and activists have continued to evolve, building a Union to further strengthen and expand the rights of aviation safety professionals, solidifying NATCA’s role as a powerful advocate for its members.This anniversary not only commemorates a pivotal moment in labor history but also reflects on decades of progress in aviation safety operations and advocacy. I didn't realise that the National Transportation Safety Board have retired their annual "Most Wanted List" of transportation safety improvements, making Aviation International News' list of safety improvements for business aviation all the more relevant. While AIN's list is targeted at business aviation, the list is readily applicable to general, commercial, and military aviation in all regards: 1. Runway safety: Prevent runway incursions and runway excursions. 2. Health: Act to improve the FAA’s (and other regulators') policy on mental health. 3. Humans: Focus on elevating pilot professionalism and leadership. 4. Organisations: Managing safety in a changing environment. 5. Regulator: Regulatory oversight and rigidity. I'd also consider adding: Loss of Control In-Flight and Stable Approaches & Landing as two areas to focus on, given the former is still responsible for the majority of general aviation and smaller air transport operation accidents; while the latter may be related to the high frequency of abnormal runway contact and loss of control on ground events (https://lnkd.in/g8tab9xF) #flightsafety #aviationsafety #pilottraining

More critical infrastructure policy news, this time for the aviation and airports sector in the U.S. Earlier this week, bipartisan lawmakers unveiled what's likely to be the final deal to regulate the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over the next five years, with the Senate set to hold a procedural vote today on the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act. A lot of consumer news has been made of a recent Transportation Department regulation requiring airlines to refund customers for flight delays beyond a certain threshold that the bill would codify, but I wanted to highlight the move to mitigate potential runway collisions after a surge in close calls. The legislation, here, would require the FAA to install new technology at airports to help controllers keep closer tabs on the locations of passenger jets on runways. And the plan is “NOT sound” because: * We know that when the site was allocated (on appeal) in 2014 there was no consultation with the aviation industry or and key stakeholders in the sector. * We know that the picture presented back then to the Planning Inspector bears no resemblance to the picture we see on a day-to-day basis today. * Nottingham City Airfield is strategically important in the nationwide picture of General Aviation. * The National Planning Policy Framework specifically states that planning authorities have a duty to maintain a network of general aviation airfields (paragraph 110 in the current NPPF). The site was identified in a national study of suitable sites for Regional Air Mobility as potentially worth £17.3 million per year to the local economy. Building on it would remove the opportunity for the region to benefit from the revolution in aviation the is about to happen- and damage the prospects of future generations.
