I like the lesson learned that Shaun Quincey mentions: “Whether you are embarking on rowing the Tasman or whether you’re building a startup, it’s gonna come down to your repeat scalable systems and processes. Your ability to identify the patterns of success that enable progress. Then, continuing to repeat those time and time again.“ “That will make sure that when the going is good, and the wind’s behind you, you’re crushing it; you’re smashing ahead in the right direction. And also when it’s not, well, at least you’re holding your ground.” Scalable processes and systems may be the the boring stuff, but it’s the stuff you need to get right, even if you are a startup.
🛶 Shaun Quincey was just the second man to row solo from Australia to New Zealand when he did it 15 years ago. ✨ He's also navigated a successful exit with his first startup Genopay, and is now focused on his new venture, Simfuni. 👇 He talks about the similarities between business and, including the common factor in succeeding and how he resisted setting his boat on fire 🔥 https://lnkd.in/gtTcwrBT

great discussion yesterday with Sajith Pai, Kushal Bhagia and Anmol Maini at Sandhill Markets - here were my top 5 takeaways: 1. some emerging Indian startup mafias are Flipkart, Paytm, Freshworks, Zoho, Urban Company. 2. much of Indian early-stage venture funding flows through university networks, unlike the US. two main networks are IIT Delhi and Bombay. Kushal Bhagia even likened IIT Delhi to India's Stanford. 3. Indian early-stage funding market has a lot of 'dark deal flow' that goes on in private networks, and investors over-rely on company and university signals. 4. there are two Indian early-stage funding markets—one for vc fluent founders and one for the nonfluent ones. 5. funding rounds for the vc fluent founders are getting closer to similar stage rounds in the US, in value. for the nonfluent ones, a US Pre-Seed is Indian Seed, a US Seed is Indian Series A, and so on.
Excited to be doing this live panel tonight with Sajith Pai and Anmol Maini on India’s early stage startup ecosystem! Thanks for organising this Sandhill Markets 🙌 Registration link below 🔗

After collaborating with numerous angel investors and family offices in MENA, I've noticed a trend where some less experienced investors aim for large ownership stakes in early-stage startups. This can backfire as it limits the startup's ability to raise future rounds and maintain control, both investors and founders need to understand that balancing early-stage funding with a healthy cap table is crucial for long-term success.

As reported in Forbes Australia, (the highlighting is my own) it seems I've done OK at picking good Startmate startups to invest in after Demo Day - here's a table of the most valuable Startmate companies since 2012. Edrolo, Morse Micro and Sitemate were all startups I was unable to invest in because I didn't have the available capital. But now we have the M8 Ventures Syndicate on Aussie Angels, maybe we'll miss out on fewer of the big uplifts! https://lnkd.in/gDNU_q79

I recently had a compelling discussion on the Global Techie YouTube channel with Kwame Yeboah where we delved into his journey of building six digital products and three startups. It's a testament to the resilience and innovation required in the entrepreneurial world, where failures are as crucial as successes. 💁♂️ Serge van Dam: "In a startup, culture eats strategy for breakfast, lunch, and morning tea." 🙈 Culture can be hard to define, let alone implement. But it's so crucial for startups in particular to get right. Read more about why it's so significant, and how you can go about setting a successful startup culture 👉 https://lnkd.in/gFA6E-_b

The message and objectives are great, Enterprise Ireland / Enterprise Ireland USA, but I will give the same feedback I provide to my colleagues here in #Connecticut…€50,000-€100,000 PSSF can be very meaningful to a young #advancedmanufacturing or #deeptech #startup, but providing this as a convertible debt note is missing the point. These funds need to be provided as either outright grants or forgiveable loans based on performance milestones. Otherwise it is not an equitable public-private-collaboration. The #entrepreneur takes 100% of the risk to create #directjobs, and the public enjoys the economic benefits of 7.44 #indirectjobs due to #manufacturing’s extraordinary #employmentmultiplier effect. #Letterkenny #Donegal #fdi #socialentrepreneurship #economicpolicyinstitute https://lnkd.in/e726JpfG
At Enterprise Ireland, helping entrepreneurs and business leaders to scale and develop their ideas, startups and ventures is at the heart of our strategy, along with offering mentoring and expert advice.
