Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES)’s ’s Heather Reams examines the pressing need for energy permitting reform in a new op-ed. If the current permitting process is not addressed, 100 gigawatts of domestic clean energy projects are at risk of significant delay, resulting in an additional 550 million metric tons of carbon emissions in the atmosphere this decade. Let’s get a bi-partisan solution in place now. https://bit.ly/4euK2rr

Lawmakers need to take a hard look at the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 to fully understand its implications in addressing the energy transition. We have concerns about provisions mandating coal and oil & gas leasing on federal public lands which would lock us into additional fossil fuel infrastructure. At a time when we should be transitioning to renewable energy resources to truly address climate change, permitting reforms must be evaluated through the lens of environmental sustainability and community well-being. Slow grid connections threaten UK’s 2035 target for decarbonising energy. A new report published by the now dissolved Environmental Audit Committee concludes that many planned renewable energy projects are being hampered by persistent problems accessing the electricity grid. These include slow connections, limited capacity, inappropriate planning regulations and market uncertainty. Critically for the transport sector, decarbonising the energy system underpins the government’s strategy to decarbonise transport. While electric vehicles remove tailpipe emissions, transport will only be decarbonised when the energy that drives the electric vehicles is itself decarbonised. Although Parliamentary committees cease to exist once an election is called, the Environmental Audit Committee’s remit has been to consider the extent to which the policies and programmes of government departments and non-departmental public bodies contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development, and to audit their performance against sustainable development and environmental protection targets. In the final report of the current Environmental Audit Committee, it concluded that projects being unable to access the grid are making the Government’s 2035 target of decarbonising the energy system harder, even though the current queue to connect to the grid contains more than twice the amount of generation required... Outdated and inconsistent siting and permitting laws are preventing the development of important #CleanEnergy projects. Where states should be encouraging new construction to ensure reliability, meet growing demand, or meet their clean energy goals, we often see red tape barriers standing in the way. Our new ‘Guide to Reforming State-Level Siting and Permitting Policies’ aims to point states towards a better process that leads to a more reliable grid and increased economic growth. On our blog, United’s Trish Demeter states: “Large-scale clean energy projects are part of the foundation on which we will build a clean energy economy, and reforming state-level siting and permitting policies so that they better align with America’s priorities will make it easier for us to power our grid with the most affordable, reliable, and clean energy available.” Read more and access the guide: https://lnkd.in/gFGMSabj

🌟 Strengthening Our Future: Celebrating Rhode Island's Energy Storage Systems Act! 🌟 We're thrilled to see Rhode Island take a monumental step towards a sustainable future with the newly signed Energy Storage Systems Act! As reported on The Cool Down, this legislation is a prime example of how state leadership can drive the clean energy revolution, making renewable energy more accessible and affordable for all. The Energy Storage Systems Act, signed into law on June 26, sets concrete goals and action plans to build a resilient and efficient grid, accommodating the green energy transition. This means better storage capacity for renewable energy projects, ensuring we can harness the power of the sun and wind even when it's not shining or blowing. Why is this important? 🌱 1. Affordable Clean Energy: With more efficient energy storage, clean energy becomes more accessible and cost-effective. 2. Resilient Infrastructure: By strengthening our grid, we're better prepared for severe storms and the impacts of climate change. 3. Environmental Impact: Increased use of renewable energy means a healthier planet for future generations. Kudos to Rhode Island for leading the charge and setting a powerful example for other states to follow. Let's continue to support and advocate for legislation that promotes clean energy and sustainability. Together, we can make a difference! 🌍💚 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gfAcfgy7 #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyStorage #GreenFuture #RenewableEnergy #Legislation #ClimateAction #RhodeIsland

Yesterday, we had A HUGE WIN! The Renewable Energy Standard Reform Bill (H.289) was voted out of the Senate and is now on the way to the Governor’s Desk. In order to become law, the bill now needs one of three things: the Governor's signature, five days sitting on the Governor's desk with no signature, or an override vote in the House and Senate if the Governor should veto it (most likely scenario). Our next job? Contact the Governor today! Let’s make sure Governor Scott knows we want to see this bill signed into law. Even if he doesn’t listen, letting legislators know how many of us have called the Governor sends a powerful message. You can call the Governor at 802-828-3333 and ask that he sign H.289, the Renewable Energy Standard Reform bill into law. Alternatively, you can write to the Governor (link below) Please let us know you took action by filling out the form linked below. If the Governor still doesn’t sign the bill (or let it become law without signing), then we’ll be asking folks to let their legislators know we support them in overriding the bill. Look for an email for us at the end of next week with an update on this. #vtpoli #vermont #vermonters #justtransition #climatechange #climatejustice #climatejusticenow #localclimateaction #actonclimate #environmentaljustice #socialjustice #renewableenergy #cleanenergy #350 #350Vermont #res #renewableenergystandard #resreformvt
