In succeeding years, other localities joined the original three. The Swiss Confederation secured its independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499. A constitution of 1848, which was modified in 1874 to allow voters to introduce referenda on proposed laws, replaced the confederation with a centralized federal government. The major European powers have long honored Switzerland's sovereignty and neutrality, and the country was not involved in either World War. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half-century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, has strengthened Switzerland's ties with its neighbors. However, the country did not officially become a UN member until 2002. Switzerland remains active in many UN and international organizations but retains a strong commitment to neutrality. cia world factbook Findings of Amer

The 25th Anniversary of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin. Now, when I exchange correspondence with the Berlin City Museum and the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, when I proposed, among other things, the creation of new cultural routes concerning Thorvaldsen and Swedish-German relations, this event in Berlin is very important to me. Remembering the 19th century, the emigration of the Swedes, the German-Scandinavian relations from that time, is crucial for understanding the development of industry, entrepreneurship, maritime trade, technology. Those events had an impact on the industrial revolution. My Swedish place in the village of Grapice, which until 1945 was in Germany and had a German name - Rittergut Grapitz, reminds me of those times. Scandinavian-German relations, getting to know and understanding their history, basing on this history today, is the key to common success. For our areas, which were for several decades under Russian rule, it is even more crucial and important. Here in Pomerania, divided by the Polish-German border, such events are a reminder of what unites us and what is of great potential. In 2025, we will celebrate 400 years of Danish diplomacy in Gdańsk. Heritage and diplomacy unite us. Berlin was once a meeting place for scientists, visionaries, industrialists, people who provided a strong foundation for the development of astronautics or television. A lot of Swedes studied at the Berlin Academy of Building and Construction. My place is definitely Scandinavian-Pomeranian-German and I would really like it to be a place for such meetings and cooperation. https://lnkd.in/d5dRAz3e #Sweden #Berlin #Germany #Denmark #Iceland #Norway #Finland #heritage #diplomacy

“As President Xi Jinping pays a state visit to France, he said China hopes to strengthen both its economic and political relationship with the European nation. After landing at Paris Orly Airport on Sunday afternoon, Xi said he hopes the visit will help ‘cement our long-standing friendship, enhance political trust, build strategic consensus and deepen exchanges and cooperation,’ according to a statement released by the Chinese foreign ministry. Xi is attending a China-France-EU trilateral meeting in Paris on Monday with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency. Macron will host a state banquet for Xi at the Elysee Palace on Monday and the leaders will on Tuesday head to the Pyrenees Mountains for a day of more intimate talks, according to French reports. This is Xi’s first visit to Europe in five years and third official trip to France as president, following visits in 2014 and 2019.” “He will speak to Macron on ‘growing China-France and China-Europe relations’ along with other major international and regional issues, the Chinese statement said. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Sino-France relations. France was the first major Western country to establish formal diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China. Noting bilateral achievements over the last six decades — such as cooperation in aviation and nuclear energy, contributing to the global climate agenda, and implementing cultural exchange activities — Xi said China is ready to forge firmer bilateral ties including more collaboration in innovation and green development, according to the official English translation of a signed article by Xi published by French newspaper Le Figaro. With the hope of jointly upholding global peace and stability, Xi said China will strengthen communication and coordination with France to find a resolution to the Ukraine crisis and restore peace in the Middle East.” “In an interview with Britain’s The Economist in late April, Macron said ‘we must do everything we can to engage China on major global issues,’ adding that it’s in Paris’ interest to make sure that China ‘has a say’. ‘We need to work with China to build peace,’ Macron said in the interview, while expressing hope that Beijing will support an Olympic truce in which conflicts are temporarily paused. Paris will host the 2024 games in July and August. In addition, the French president said that he hopes to discuss trade issues with Xi, calling for greater reciprocity. During the interview, he defended the European Commission’s recent anti-subsidy probes into Chinese electric vehicles, photovoltaics and wind power suppliers. ‘We cannot sustainably have a Europe with rules that limit subsidies to these producers, who are taxed at 15% when their electric vehicle enters the Chinese market and who, when the Chinese vehicle arrives on the European market after receiving massive aid, are taxed at 10%’.”

https://lnkd.in/gZNCGkfs RT HON CHRISTOPHER LUXON - Prime Minister of New Zealand - 19/06/2024 "New geostrategic realities have made our region more complicated, more chaotic, and more challenging to navigate. We can no longer take for granted the ability of the rules-based international order to deliver progress, safeguard our ambition, or protect our interests. And in this context, I will be clear. New Zealand will be active and engaged, working alongside Japan and other partners and friends, to use our agency, influence, and role in the world to contribute to and shape global and regional security."

U.S. foreign assistance can be a challenging political issue due to a widespread misconception that it consumes a large share of the federal budget. Also, far more attention is paid to what hasn’t worked -- while the many successes occur quietly in the background with no recognition. In a new series starting today, MFAN is shedding light on the success stories of U.S. #GlobalDevelopment, challenging misconceptions and celebrating achievements. Our first case study examines Croatia – a country that not long ago was grappling with enormous challenges and had a very uncertain future. Now, thanks in part to U.S. assistance, Croatia has been transformed into a vibrant economic and diplomatic partner of the United States – not to mention a popular vacation destination! It’s a telling example of the transformative impact of U.S. foreign assistance – and why it’s more important than ever to support America’s global leadership: https://lnkd.in/eq5WZ3mG

🇨🇳XI JINPING: "Mr President, my dear old friend, I was delighted to receive your invitation to come to the ancient city of Kazan to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. This is our third meeting this year. The BRICS Summit is taking place in Kazan, and I learnt a lot about this city. I know that this summit is of great importance. I found out that, 400 years ago, the Great Tea Road, which connected our countries, also passed through Kazan. Chinese Wuyi tea was brought to Russia via this route. At the beginning of this month, we exchanged congratulations on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. Over the past decades, China-Russia relations have withstood the test of a changing international situation, come a long way and acquired an unprecedented character. We have taken the right path of building relations between great powers on the principles of non-alignment, non-confrontation, and non-direction against third parties. Mr President, in this new era, you and I always pay greater attention to bilateral relations and monitor them personally. Both countries are committed to the spirit of eternal good-neighbourliness and friendship, as well as comprehensive strategic interaction and mutually beneficial cooperation. They constantly enhance and expand multifaceted strategic interaction and practical cooperation in all areas, thereby giving a powerful boost to national revival and modernisation, making a major contribution to the well-being of the two nations and the protection of international justice. During this unprecedent tectonic transformation, unseen for centuries, the international situation is undergoing serious changes and upheavals. However, this cannot shake my conviction that the strategic choice of the two countries in favour of firm mutual support, the deep centuries-old friendship between our countries, and China and Russia’s sense of duty as great powers are inviolable. BRICS is perhaps one of the most important cooperation platforms to consolidate the broad developing world and emerging market countries. It is a system-forming factor in the creation of equal, orderly multipolarity and universally accessible inclusive economic globalisation. We appreciate the enormous work done by Russia as part of its chairmanship, which has largely facilitated the successful beginning of cooperation within the greater BRICS. We praise it. I look forward to a substantive discussion with my BRICS colleagues, first and foremost with you, on further development of our association. This will not only consolidate our positions and send a positive signal of solidarity and cooperation, but also expand large-scale strategic interaction and practical cooperation within the group, hence opening up additional opportunities for the Global South countries and making a greater contribution to the cause of building a community with a shared future for humanity." 🇨🇳🇫🇷 On the afternoon of May 6 local time, President Xi Jinping held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysées Palace in #Paris. President Xi expressed his delight in making the third state visit to France at the 60th anniversary of China-France relations. The precious 60-year journey of the China-France relationship will better inform us about how to embark on the next 60 years. As the world goes through transformation not seen in a century, the two sides should stay committed to independence, mutual understanding, long-term vision, and mutual benefit, which represent the spirit that guided the establishment of their diplomatic ties. They should also enrich it with new features of the new era, build a China-France relationship in the new era characterized by mutual trust, stability, commitment to fundamental principles while breaking new ground, and a strong sense of responsibility. The two sides should uphold independence and jointly prevent a new cold war or bloc confrontation; they should continue to understand each other and jointly promote harmonious coexistence in a colorful world; they should take a long view and work together for an equal and orderly multipolar world; and they should pursue win-win cooperation and jointly oppose decoupling and cutting off supply chains. #China #Xijinping
