‘The Great Sea: A Human History of the Mediterranean’ by David Abulafia offers an exciting exploration of the Mediterranean's pivotal role in transport, empire dynamics, and cultural interactions from prehistory to the 21st century, highlighting its vibrant history of human interaction and commercial competition. Book Summary: “Connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa, the Mediterranean Sea has been for millennia the place where religions, economies, and political systems met, clashed, influenced and absorbed one another. In this brilliant and expansive book, David Abulafia offers a fresh perspective by focusing on the sea itself: its practical importance for transport and sustenance; its dynamic role in the rise and fall of empires; and the remarkable cast of characters-sailors, merchants, migrants, pirates, pilgrims-who have crossed and re-crossed it. Ranging from prehistory to the 21st century, The Great Sea is above all a history of human interaction. Interweaving major political and naval developments with the ebb and flow of trade, Abulafia explores how commercial competition in the Mediterranean created both rivalries and partnerships, with merchants acting as intermediaries between cultures, trading goods that were as exotic on one side of the sea as they were commonplace on the other. He stresses the remarkable ability of Mediterranean cultures to uphold the civilizing ideal of convivencia, "living together." Now available in paperback, The Great Sea is the definitive account of perhaps the most vibrant theater of human interaction in history.” Available: https://lnkd.in/dZffN2_h Tags: #travel_zubairsbookshelf #mediterranean_zubairsbookshelf

On September 15, 1947, a redrawn state border divided the Goriška region between Italy and Yugoslavia, creating Gorizia in Italy and prompting the construction of a "new" Gorica in Yugoslavia. Designed by architect Edvard Ravnikar, the city was initially an ideological victory project with youth brigades showcasing unity. However, after Yugoslavia's expulsion from the Eastern Bloc in 1948, financial support dwindled, and the city adapted Ravnikar's plan due to constraints, creating a more "human-sized" place. As the Iron Curtain shifted, the border became a capitalist entry point, turning Nova Gorica into a hub for novelties with the first Yugoslav pedestrian zone. By 1988, it evolved into a prominent gambling destination with Europe's largest casino, Casino Perla, by 1994. In 2004, Slovenia joined the EU, and the common square between the two Gorizia cities now symbolizes transborder unity. They will jointly hold the title of the first transborder European Capital of Culture in 2025, two decades after Slovenia's EU accession celebration. Nova Gorica's history involves dynamic shifts and evolving ideas, reflected in the Ab Initio project—a part of the ECoC official program. This initiative, emphasizing rediscovering the city's modernist heritage, integrates diverse community experiences through literature analysis and inclusive discussions across demographics. These dialogues empower locals as vital contributors to urban community strength, identity, and well-being. #novagorica #newtownsnewnarratives #internationalnewtowninstitute

The Caravanserais from the old Silk Road days remind me of modern day tech & innovation hubs: outposts where merchants, nobles, dignitaries and a host of characters gathered to network, trade and learn about the world. 🗺 ''The journeys of merchants and their caravans along the Silk Road through the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa would have been much more difficult if not for caravanserais, that dotted those ancient routes. Variously described as “guest houses,” “roadside inns,” and “hostels,” caravanserais were buildings designed to provide overnight housing to travelers. Merchants and their caravans were the most frequent visitors. In furnishing, safe respite for guests from near and far, caravanserais also became centers for exchange of goods and culture. Travelers from East and West, speaking many different languages, traded stories, news, merchandise, and ideas while they mingled at these trade hubs. They sampled local cuisine and observed foreign etiquette. They learned more about Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism from missionaries and scholars passing through. When they traveled on, they took much that was new and different along with them. The economic and cultural exchanges caravanserais made possible had far-reaching effects still seen today in the variety of languages, faiths, and cultures co-existing in this region of the world.'' 📸 Obruk Kızören Obruk Han, a 13th Century CE, Seljuk Caravanserai, located within borders of Karatay district, Türkiye.

The Legendary Silk Road: Trade, Culture, and Adventure Across Continents Originating in the 7th century BCE, the Silk Road stretched from China to the Mediterranean, linking Asia and Europe. More than a trade route, it was a bridge for artistic and cultural exchange. Cities like Antioch, Palmyra, and Beijing anchored a vast web of paths that spanned deserts, mountains, and countless landscapes. 🌏 Route of Innovation Under the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu's initiative expanded trade routes across the Pamir Mountains—"the roof of the world"—to reach Central Asia. Soon, silk, spices, tea, and more flowed east and west. Merchant caravans from today’s Afghanistan, India, and Persia carried exotic goods like perfumes, gems, and glassware. Despite the journey's dangers, trade flourished, enriching cities along the way. 🚢 High Medieval Travelers The Silk Road also connected empires diplomatically. Notable explorers, like Marco Polo and Giovanni de Carpini, traveled these routes. Marco Polo’s account of his adventures, especially his service under Kublai Khan, shaped the medieval European view of Asia. Today, parts of the Silk Road are UNESCO World Heritage Sites—a testament to this ancient pathway that changed the world. #SilkRoad #CulturalExchange #TradeHistory #ChinaAndBeyond #Inspection #Certification #China #Germany #Testing

The African History is the most powerful, educative, captivating historical event world wide. In talking about the history of Africa the most captivating historical events that took place and will always be remembered is THE TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE (the means of transporting Africans as slaves through the Atlantic sea). The Portuguese explorers is historically said to have been the first European to have initiated the slave trade in west Africa at around 15th - 16th century by forcefully capturing Africans transporting them through the Atlantic sea as it was the only routes that connects Africans to the new world(America)and turning them into labourers for the plantation. later at around the 16th century the Portuguese where followed by other European countries like the Great Britain, Spain, France and Netherland. The TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE trade officially took off around the 17th-18th century where millions of Africans where captured, tortured, sold and transported across the Atlantic ocean to the NEW WORLD this method was called the MIDDLE PASSAGE. THIS journey was highly notorious and harsh for it resulted to a wide spread of death and unbearable tortured to Africans by their European masters and colonies note: a man who does not knows his historical back is like a child who doesn't know his or her left and right and can be easily swept of his feet. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.
