RAPS Code of Ethics: As regulatory professionals, we have the responsibility to maintain particularly high standards of professional conduct while exercising professional requirements and duties in upholding and clarifying the applicable laws and regulations. We strive to make a positive contribution to public health by using this code of ethics in our workplace(s). This is the RAPS Code of Ethics; regulatory professionals understand that their employers and others may have other codes of ethics that they may need to acknowledge, understand, and follow. Our Code of Ethics was first initiated in 2003 and has been updated twice since then. We vow to regularly assess its applicability and refresh its content as the regulatory profession grows and evolves. RAPS members perceive eight core values that regulatory professionals use in conducting their professional responsibilities. Duty -Competence - Objectivity -Integrity- Honesty - Courage - Fairness - Respect

Is it possible to uphold transparency in clinical trials while also protecting private intellectual property?  This central question in today’s research ethics pits the ethical principle of transparency against the private interest of intellectual property protection. While companies must safeguard their innovations, this need does not exempt them from the obligation to register and disclose clinical trial data on platforms like www.clinicaltrials.gov.   To effectively uphold the ethical principle of transparency while ensuring the protection of intellectual property, consider the following strategies: Timed Disclosure: Strategically timing the release of trial data to coincide with IP filings can protect key innovations while meeting transparency requirements.    Selective Data Sharing: Balancing ethical reporting with IP protection involves sharing sufficient trial data to meet regulatory standards, without compromising proprietary details.    Regulatory and Ethical Frameworks: Adherence to both Canadian guidelines and international standards ensures clinical trials are registered and reported in ways that uphold transparency and accountability.    Robust Internal Policies: Implementing strong governance ensures that organizations effectively align with ethical obligations and IP strategies, managing compliance across the board.    The challenge of aligning clinical trial transparency with intellectual property protection is complex, but it is essential. HOW IMPORTANT IS INFORMED CONSENT: This is the most important aspect of the therapeutic agreement. To prescribe a medication without discussing it with the patient noting risks and benefits as well as alternatives is a violation of professional ethics. Yet I see this too often.
