From the Captain’s Seat: My Top Ten Tips for Staying Positive in Tough Times As a captain, I know firsthand how demanding this job can be. Between long hours, being away from home, reserve duty, fatigue, and the slow pace of seniority movement during industry downturns, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lose sight of the passion that brought us to this career. I’ve been feeling these same struggles lately and, if I’m honest, even posted some negative comments recently. But a fellow pilot reminded me that they missed seeing my usual positivity. It made me reflect on how important it is to stay grounded, even in the toughest times. So, I’ve started focusing on some strategies to keep a positive mindset, and now I want to share them with you. Over the next few posts, I’ll be sharing a Top Ten List of tips that have helped me deal with the doubts, fatigue, and anxiety we all face as pilots. Reflecting on a recent sunset cruise experience in Los Cabos, it strikes me how similar sunsets are to the path of professional and personal growth. I recently hit my 6 month mark with Horizon and what a time it has been. ✈️ I have flown hundreds of flights to 30+ cities, I’ve had 3 am wake up calls, 4 am showtimes, last minute schedule changes, tearful calls to loved ones, restless nights, made new friends, learned a new vocabulary, finished several books, spent countless hours away from home, in airports, in airplanes, and away from loved ones. It’s been an eventful few months full of personal growth and I feel so grateful to have a job that I really enjoy. I’ve learned so much about myself and the aviation industry over the past several months, and in no particular order here are a few of the things I’ve learned: 1. It’s never too late to start over. Whether that be starting a new job or moving to a new city, or both; it’s not too late to try something new. This career marks my third shift in the last 10 years and it’s been such an exciting and meaningful change. 2. Change is hard. I have shed a fair amount of tears in the last few months because of the impact this job change has had on my life. Change is a constant and if you are someone who like me values consistency, it forces you to learn to be even more adaptable and flexible in all aspects of your life. 3. Be kind. You never know what kind of day someone is having and being kind goes a long way. 4. Ask for what you need and advocate for yourself and others. In this industry you have to have a lot of blind trust with those you interact and work with on a daily basis. I trust now, more than I ever have if I ask for something from my crew or my team, they will be there to support me and know I would do the same for them. 5. You can have a large impact with small actions. 6. Some of the best people watching happens in airports. Enough said. 7. Stay hydrated and pack snacks. 8. You will never undervalue a nap ever again. 9. You can pack everything you need for 5 days in a carry on. I promise, you can do it. 10. Be kind and respectful to the people working in TSA, the gate agents, the ground crews and the customer service agents. They work hard and a lot of the work they do goes unnoticed.

What if the biggest opportunities in your life are on the other side of getting on a plane? Marcus Murphy once shared this advice from his mentor: “Sometimes, you just have to get on the plane.” That simple idea struck a different chord for me as I descended into Austin after this most recent trip. It’s not just about travel—it’s a metaphor for action, for taking the leap even when it feels uncertain. In life, we “get on the plane” for so many reasons: To close the deal  To meet with clients  To recharge and reset  To show up for our team To pursue that next big thing  To take our kids to Disney Land  To surprise our partner with a trip Or even to see about a girl (for all the Good Will Hunting fans out there). There are endless reasons, and sometimes, you won’t know the impact until you take off or until you get home. For me, getting on that plane this past week wasn’t just about travel. It was about new connections, gaining perspective, and recharging for a strong Q4. Yes, sometimes you need to stay. Sometimes, you need to put your head down and make it work. But if you always wait for the “perfect time,” you might miss the moments that can change everything. So next time you’re hesitating, ask yourself: What if this is the leap that leads to something greater? Sometimes, you need to get on the plane and trust that wherever it’s taking you is exactly where you need to be.

Working in the cruise industry taught me so many lessons and attributes, like: grit, resilience, humility, and compassion. 3 things I know for sure are: ☝️Embrace every part of your journey and learn everything you can from it. 🙏 Be grateful for every opportunity, even if it doesn't make sense at the time. 💪 Most importantly, try to trust yourself and your path. Holding this VIP card brings back a flood of memories from my time working on cruise ships. Back then, I was unsure about my path in life, questioning my future and wondering where my journey would lead me. Little did I know that those experiences would play such a significant role in shaping the person I am today. The challenges, the triumphs, and the connections I made during that time have all contributed to my personal and professional growth today. To my fellow hotel professionals, especially those who may be feeling uncertain about their own journeys, I want to remind you that every experience, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is a crucial part of your story. The skills you develop, the resilience you build, and the relationships you forge will all come together to create a unique and powerful narrative. As I look back on my time on the ships, I'm grateful for the lessons learned and the opportunities that arose from that chapter of my life. It's a testament to the fact that our paths may not always be clear, but every step we take brings us closer to our purpose. So, embrace the journey, even when it feels uncertain. Trust that your experiences are shaping you into the person you're meant to be. When you think about why you did not get the promotion you were hoping for, consider how clear you have been with your boss that you want that promotion. Have you just been working hard and hoping that they’ll notice? The best spokesperson for you..is you! If you are unclear with your manager about what you want, how are they supposed to know? But, then you worry about being turned down. The next step is to ask why. And then, ask how you can show that you are ready. Never shy away from taking that leap, but commit fully to it; with everything you can.
