🧠 In the PR industry, mental health is a critical issue. A survey of 116 agencies in the UK conducted by Opinium showed that 91% of PR professionals experienced poor mental health in the past year, largely due to workload stress. Notably, 29% of PR pros continue to rate their stress levels at eight out of 10, highlighting a need for more supportive work environments. ❓So, what are PR leaders doing to boost employee wellbeing and improve mental health? Grace French, our director, and head of culture gave her thoughts, “Many employers are good at springing into action when someone experiences a mental health crisis. But you must also strive to reduce poor mental health triggers and empower employees to recognise the early signs so support can be offered as early as possible. At Stand, we all have wellness action plans which reflect on what triggers poor mental health, and what support we would like, which empowers colleagues to look out for others’ wellbeing. You must also provide internal and external support." Organisations are being encouraged to listen to employee feedback and implement initiatives that foster a supportive environment, with ideas like mental health first-aid and flexible working. This shift towards prioritising mental well-being not only benefits employees but also enhances overall productivity and job satisfaction. How can PR leaders improve employee wellbeing? The number of professionals citing poor mental health and wellbeing within the PR sector has been less than desirable. And, according to the latest research by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA), it hasn’t improved. A survey of PR practitioners in the UK, conducted by Opinium, found that the diagnosis of mental health conditions in the industry is on the rise, as 91% of respondents admitted to having poor mental health at work in the past 12 months. Meanwhile, the proportion of PR professionals who have been diagnosed with a mental health condition has risen to 33%, an 8% increase from last year’s result of 25%. Additionally, the number of PR pros who admitted to finding their job stressful has “stayed consistent” since 2021, with 29% continuing to rate their stress levels in the higher tier of eight to 10. We asked PR professionals what we can do to combat this mental health issue the industry seems to have… Set anti-overwork boundaries Focus on manager training Make initiatives family focused Take preventative measures Don't stick to just one approach Support an open culture Thanks to Grace French, Edward Clark, Nicola C. I have always thought that employee wellbeing should be important to employers (particularly in PR), but Covid really provided the need to make sure that the right support was in place. At Speed Communications I have had the opportunity to work on lots of initiates with the team, some that have stuck and some that we have trialled and moved away from - but that’s the important part! You need to be agile and responsive to changing needs and different people to try and get support that will truly help across the board. Thanks PRmoment for asking me to contribute to this article, to show the great things that are happening across the PR industry to support employees. #pr #publicrelations #wellbeing #employeewellbeing
