Shopify gave Amazon Pay the boot in Europe. The checkout battle continues. Gone by August 6th. Amazon's response? Asking merchants for more cash reserves. What's really going on here? 1. Power play: Neither wanted the other’s terms 2. Negotiation tactics: Using merchants as bargaining chips 3. Strategic shift: Shopify doubling down on their own payments The real losers? Amazon, Shopify & BigCommerce Q1 earnings are out. It's clear that eCommerce is slowing down, and the high-flying days of previous years feel like a distant past. Amazon barely increased product sales YOY, and most of its growth came from services. I suspect most of BC and Shopify's growth came from new customer acquisition, not existing customer growth. Future eCommerce growth will likely come from B2B eCommerce by moving larger purchases online. This will be an era of consolidation where the truly gritty capital-efficient players will win.

Now, Amazon has made things even easier by adding PayPal as a payment option through Buy with Prime. 🛍️ PayPal is now available at checkout after shoppers log in to their Amazon account for brands that have integrated Buy with Prime APIs. 📦 Starting next year, Prime members will be able to link their Amazon account with PayPal so that Prime shipping benefits are available automatically whenever they use PayPal while shopping with Buy with Prime on participating merchants’ websites. 16 minutes. A customer placed an order on my store through Buy with Prime for 16 minutes, then cancelled the order through Buy with Prime (subject to no approval by me). BAM. Customer gets refunded in full, order is automatically cancelled, Shopify and Buy with Prime make it out with their processing fee I END UP PAYING FOR. Obviously BwP points to Shopify, then Shopify says well it's in our ToS. This just doesn't seem right. This elucidates a larger point to me. On Amazon orders pend for about 3o minutes. I think it's a grace period so Amazon (by extension, their sellers) can save on credit card processing fees like this.
