As this election day is looming and two of the VP candidates are veterans themselves, I’m reflecting on the profound contributions veterans make to the workforce, especially in today’s politically divided world. Veterans bring resilience, loyalty, and adaptability—qualities that are indispensable for any organization. As a veteran myself and prior NCO, I know firsthand the strength and commitment veterans enlisted and officer offer. Yet, many veterans struggle to transition into civilian careers, often due to a lack of "conventional" corporate experience, despite their unique skills and dedication. As we see todays election results lets remember the amazing country we have, the sacrifices some of us have made and continue to make for our freedom and the right to vote. At Glendale Parade Store, we recognize and honor the sacrifices of these heroes by actively hiring veterans and their families. Today, nearly a third of our team comprises veterans, including those with disabilities, as well as spouses of retired service members. These individuals have given so much to our nation, and hiring them is one way we can give back. Their adaptability, leadership, and problem-solving skills are the backbone of our work and drive our company forward. Let’s remember that honoring veterans goes beyond ceremonies; it’s about creating pathways to meaningful employment where their contributions can continue to make a difference. This Election Day, I encourage more businesses, especially small ones, to consider hiring veterans. The hilarious meme aside, loss of identity and purpose is a very real thing and, yes, it can feel like a freight train hitting when least expected. #veteranshelpingveterans I would argue it feels more like an infected wound that refuses to heal. The process can be extremely slow, annoyingly painful, and can have serious consequences if left unchecked. What worked for me was seeing and experiencing how other countries deal with it. As an example, in Israel (gross oversimplification ahead), for better or for worse, post-military service mentalities are nowhere similar to ours. I’ve tried multiple times to speak with Israelis about their military service and I can best describe it as asking an American about working at Stop and Shop; it’s just an experience. Obviously, the ‘mandated’ element of Israel’s military service plays a huge role in the backdrop behind U.S. voluntary military service, but I suspect it’s more than just that. Individual results may differ! But seeing military service treated as taking out the garbage (with no special or endearing treatment, no stickers, unit patches, bumper stickers, rank, or license plates), was strange at first — almost uncaring or depressing — but it actually helped me understand that although it is not ‘nothing’, it is merely a ‘chapter’ in a long life. In other words, I view the veteran identity as a dial more so than an on/off switch, and I avoid those who treat it as a switch like the plague. We have 'speaking AS A VETERAN' memes for a reason; there's a kernel of truth to our identity politics—unique to the United States (I follow all the ‘as a veteran’ folks in D.C., and, for me, having broken away from that mentality and the silly internal squabbles, I’ve freed up a lot of the ‘lack of identity’ issues I faced years ago because it was merely a chapter, not the entire book of my life. I’m also not the only one who has figured this out; I have a long list of professionals I follow who express similar opinions. Bridging Military and Civilian Life... How do we do it? I personally think it has to be alongside civilians/veteran supporters. That's the best way to learn something new. And a beautiful thing that we have is a balance. We also have some non-veterans in the room, some veteran supporters who are entrepreneurs that gave those same great insights of, like, this is the journey we've been on for 10-15 years as well. Don't be worried that you're still evolving into that next step because it's shared across high achievers. #VeteransDay The military is a closed personnel/social/cultural system — world — that bakes #teamwork into its every fabric — building teams rapidly, trusting them quickly, relying on them heavily. After their service, #veterans return to an open system(/world) where “team” often means something else entirely. It’s a transition that often feels unmooring. Dislocating. Disorienting. A few ways you can be a good teammate to the vets in your world — starting this Veterans Day — * Look out for people who are transitioning from the military — whether it’s been weeks or years, or even decades. Make and cultivate connections. Check in. Check in again. * Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions. How has the transition been for you? How’s it been for your family? Your battle buddies? What do you miss most? * Listen. Learn! Service members have so much deep knowledge about building and sustaining strong #teams. All kinds of workplaces can benefit from that — often hard-earned — wisdom. [A bit of my own context — After growing up without any real exposure to the military, I stumbled into a civilian social scientist gig — straight out of grad school — with the #army. I thought I’d stay a year or two, tops. Looking back in the rearview, I can see now why I stayed — for almost a decade; why I’ll almost certainly find my way back again, at some point, back onto that crazy highspeed highway. So much of that “why” is because I loved the sense of teamwork so deeply (necessarily) embedded in every element. Because of the battle buddies I made and miss. Because of the sense of #belonging — to the mission, to the collective, to each other.]
