When I hire, I look for rockstars—the best of the best. 🎸 But here’s the thing: if those top performers have to show up every day at 100% to feel moderately successful, maybe we, as bosses, are doing it wrong. This setup is exactly why I burned out of every single job I have ever had. Knowing you are smart and talented yet going home every day feeling like you did a 🫤 job. I tell my team that there are seasons when giving 100% is necessary. But most of the time, rockstars should be able to show up at 70% and still feel like they’re crushing it. No drama, just clarity. Here’s what separates the good from the great: The internal push — I should be doing something better, more innovative. That instinct to push harder, to raise the bar, is what moves teams forward. I’ve been on both sides. Early in my career, I didn’t care. I wasn’t motivated. But when I was part of a team that counted on me, everything changed. I pushed harder because I felt the weight of responsibility. Now, we’ve built a team where everyone feels that. Congratulations!!! I've mentioned Performance Matters in previous posts. I've also mentioned Steve and Currie. To say these guys are amazing at what they do doesn't begin to describe just how great they are. I met Steve and Currie for the first time not long after they started with Performance Matters. Any past experience our company had with consulting companies was less than positive and at the time my mind hadn't opened enough to learn more about their unique services. However, they both knew long before I could see it that Performance Matters and Hughes Customat, Inc. would eventually be working together. The work we are doing with Performance Matters is having a profound effect on how we are operating our business and for me on a personal level -and over a relatively short period of time. I've been the president of our company since 2017 but I never actually believed myself to be an actual "leader" until recently. These two and their own leadership skills and styles are big part in this There's a team behind Steve and Currie (Gary, Caleb, and more to add soon), but it all started for our company with them. I can't thank them enough. Currie - for your patience and for getting to know me personally and learn about our business and the challenges we have. Steve - for allowing me to share details regarding some really difficult things and situations (business and personal)- without judgement. The passion (and compassion) these two have for small independent laundries is indescribable. I look so forward to our work ahead. Congratulations to both Steve Royals, MBA and Currie Gilbert on your first 10 years with Performance Matters. If anyone were to attempt to list all the contributions you both are making to the Industrial Laundry industry, some would surely be missed - there are that many! In our journey, we’ve learned the value of celebrating small wins every step of the way. These moments of recognition keep the team motivated and push them to go that extra mile, doing things others might not. From my perspective, celebrating and appreciating efforts—no matter how small—creates an enthusiastic, driven team. This energy not only boosts morale but also fosters a positive work environment, leading to impressive results. It's the small wins that lead to bigger successes in the long run.

FACT: Team engagement & productivity increase by 14% when they are appreciated. It’s been a ritual to celebrate our monthly top performers at Fleapo. But I’ve been asked, ‘if celebrating top performers within a company has been really fruitful?’ Here is my answer [ after practising & observing it for the last 8 months ] ➡️ Shining a spotlight on top talent makes them feel valued. ➡️ It also motivates others to strive for excellence. ➡️ Public recognition on social media and internal platforms makes achievements visible to the whole company. ➡️ Moreover, celebrating wins together builds community and allows us to show our gratitude. So the short answer - Yes, it has been fruitful. But why is it so crucial? The problem is that high performers can often feel overlooked and underappreciated. When their hard work goes unnoticed, it leads to disengagement and increased turnover. We need to agitate and bring awareness to this issue. The solution is consistent recognition programs that celebrate wins big and small. Take for instance; Markus Villig and his team built Bolt, Shola Akinlade and his team gave us Paystack, and LinkedIn by Reid Hoffman would not have been possible without a team. These founders and pioneers, though very intelligent, could not have gone as far as they did without the support of a great team.
