Andy MacMillan is a very interesting choice for CEO by Alteryx and its investors: Clearlake Capital Group & Insight Ventures. At a time when most other #analytics and data companies are obsessed with AI, Alteryx picks up a CEO with recent past successes in both in product development and marketing data.
I think these specialties will work in Alteryx‘s favor as analytics companies are being asked to further demonstrate their value and to embed into revenue, producing processes and workflows. At this point, Alteryx is a market leader in analytic workflows with $1 billion in annual revenue, but there is still a next step where Alteryx still has room to further own analytic based workflows, light/low code applications, and third party analytic agents.
And in a Gen AI and line of business driven technology purchase world, Alteryx’ weaknesses in these areas are not necessarily around functional capability, but around usability and access for all relevant power users and decision-making buyers.
Not that I expect Andy to be designing every pixel and campaign from scratch, but I do think that a couple of his recent past stints as CEO puts him in a good position to have executive discussions with other executives who care about adoption and bringing data and analytics closer to the work. Obviously, generative AI has to be a part of this discussion, but there’s also work to be done around better embedded API calls and providing a zero click or one click access to contextualized analytic outputs across the analytic product tools.
From a practical perspective, I believe that this executive choice will lead to extended usage within existing Alteryx environments and an accelerated payback period for net new deployment or projects above and beyond current established metrics starting in mid-2025. In today’s accelerated tech environment, we all expect payback and real changes in our environment from investments in 6 to 12 months and hiring a CEO is no exception.

In my past working experience, I always felt certain areas, like IT and Accounting were not considered as important as the revenue generating area's of that company. Of course this is wrong on so many levels!
Danny Varghese explains data stewardship perfectly in this video!
I am thankful to now see organizations placing higher importance in areas such as data ownership and data governance. Bad data yields bad results - invest in your data, invest in your technology, and watch your bottom line grow!

When building their teams, data leaders must look beyond technical skills: Diversity in experience, background, and thought is crucial for maximizing the value of data, to:
- Bring richer perspectives and unlock hidden insights.
- Better reflect the customer base and understand their needs
- Build upon lifelong learning and curiosity to deepen technical expertise.
A variety of perspectives and experiences lead to better outcomes. As a firm in the business of creating data driven businesses, we have a unique perspective to this value.

Last year, Marc de Swaan Arons joined one of our CMO Collaborative national webinars and shared a powerful perspective on marketing’s evolving role.
At a conference, McKinsey & Company spoke about a "CMO crisis," claiming marketers are seen as unaccountable and overly tactical. Marc offers a better take: this isn’t a crisis—it’s an opportunity.
By collaborating with CFOs and CEOs, we can prove marketing’s impact, drive business growth, and prioritize purpose-driven, humanized strategies. Let’s embrace this moment to show how we truly add value. 💡

Last week, I had an incredible opportunity to chat with David Meltzer on his Office Hours show!
During our conversation, we dove into a critical issue many businesses face today: underutilized data. It's staggering to learn that between 80% to 99% of the data organizations capture is never used after being stored! Imagine the strategic potential if we tapped into these insights.
Too often, companies focus on capturing data but miss out on the strategic opportunities that come from implementing it effectively. By leveraging data properly, we can streamline processes and reduce the pressure on the C-suite by enabling better decision-making at every level.
My team at The Data Group and I are passionate about helping businesses move from being "data capturers" to truly data-driven.
