In conjunction with Earth Day 2024, we're reminded of our collective responsibility to cherish and protect our planet. This year's theme, "Planet vs. Plastics", underscores the urgent need to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.   Plastics have become ubiquitous in our daily lives, but their proliferation comes at a significant cost to our environment. From polluting our oceans to harming wildlife and disrupting ecosystems, the impact of plastic pollution is profound and far-reaching.   As individuals and as organisations, we have a vital role to play in turning the tide against plastic pollution. It's not just about reducing our own plastic consumption, but also advocating for systemic changes that prioritise sustainability and innovation.   At ORIX Leasing Malaysia Group (“OLM Group”), we are committed to environmental stewardship and continually seek ways to nurture a sustainable planet. Last year, we rolled up our sleeves and embarked on two impactful initiatives: our ‘Beach Cleaning’ and ‘Plant A Tree’ projects, which demonstrated our dedication to protecting the environment. In furtherance of our commitment to a sustainable future, we are guided by our Sustainable and Responsible Financing Policy & Guidelines, setting clear goals aimed at minimising our credit balance to unfavourable sectors. 🌎 We're thrilled to unveil our newest Impact Report, detailing a year of dedicated efforts in building science, crafting solutions, and creating spaces for sustainable transformation and lasting impact. Here are some key highlights from 2023: ➡️ Adding it up report: Our study introduces a novel method of measuring the leakage of additives caused by mismanaged waste. ➡️ Plastic Footprint Network: In 2023, EA convened Plastic Footprint Network, a network comprising 100 professionals from 35 organizations. Through collaborative efforts under EA's coordination, Plastic Footprint Network released an updated version of the plastic footprint methodology. The Plastic Footprint Network website now provides 11 modules for professionals, assisting in the measurement of plastic leakage and directing mitigation efforts effectively. ➡️ Launch of Plastic Overshoot Day: Introduced in 2023, our report sheds new light on the plastic pollution crisis, aiming to support UN Plastic Treaty negotiators and other global actors in addressing this urgent issue. We've recently launched the 2024 report, setting Plastic Overshoot Day on the 5th of September 2024. ➡️ International clients: We're proud to have partnered with 59 international clients, supporting them on their sustainable journey. From conducting plastic footprint analyses to assessing carbon footprints, performing Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), and providing access to our Plasteax data for comprehensive plastic waste management, we remain dedicated to supporting their sustainability objectives. Plastic pollution is an extraordinary global challenge that will require the full effort of the private sector, governments, civil society and development partners to tackle. Decisions we make today towards a #CircularEconomy transition will shape the world for years to come. IFC - International Finance Corporation and World Bank brought together public and private sector leaders on the sidelines of the #INC-4. Anke Boykin from PepsiCo Robert Flores from Berry Global, Colm Jordan from Indorama Ventures PCL, and Massimiano Tellini from Intesa Sanpaolo shared what drives their companies’ investment decisions and their perspectives on the combination of regulations and financial incentives needed to unlock private investment across the plastic value chain. Small group discussions between public, private and development partners reflected on the specific roles policies, mandates and financial instruments can play under different local contexts. Key takeaways: 1. Unlocking private investment requires a sustainable economic environment - policies, fees and financial instruments such as Blended Finance all play a role in covering ongoing financing needs and enabling up front investments. 2. Design and implementation of policies need to consider the local context - geography, infrastructure, behavioral norms (the same approach cannot be deployed in Small Island States as in large countries). 3. Governments need to ensure existing policies aren’t creating unintended barriers and preventing desired investments (e.g., through criteria that prevents the use of recycled content or alternative materials). 4. Collaboration is essential. Addressing plastic pollution will require shifts across all stakeholder groups. Governments should leverage local private sector, civil society and other stakeholders to co-create solutions that work for their markets. This will facilitate learning, buy-in and a smoother transition. By bringing together diverse perspectives, this dialogue aimed to deepen understanding of how and why particular policies trigger private action and contribute to better informed negotiations and implementation of the Plastic Treaty outcomes.
