🌍 Earth Day is a global movement that empowers millions to champion environmental protection and sustainability, which is a critical focus at Beckman Coulter Life Sciences. By the end of the century, the world’s population is expected to reach 10 billion and synthetic biology will play an integral role in sustaining this growth. We see a way to enable laboratories to support this, with #synbio solutions that decrease hands-on time, costs, and plastic waste in laboratory workflows, while increasing accuracy and reproducibility in your results – driving results and #sustainability. Which material do you most want to see biology replace? In a week where swatches are being unrolled in Paris and Steven Fry calls for the King's Guards to replace the bear fur used for their bearskins where will biofabricated materials gain traction with the market? 🧫Through #biotech we have the tools to design new properties and replace petroleum based materials and those made using processes damaging to our planet. 👖Apparel is just one application, materials are all around us. How can we reduce the impact of what we use to cover our skin or lock into the built environment? I’m excited to see what comes out of the bio-meets-design discussion this week and continue the conversation as to how the consumer and planet will benefit from #artificialntelligence accelerated innovation of #biomaterials next week at the World Economic Forum annual meeting. #bioeconomy #biofabrication #getthefutureyouwant

Introducing the first video in our new series on Nereda® technology! Discover how Professor Mark van Loosdrecht, the mind behind Nereda®, was initially driven by curiosity to explore how bacteria create different structures in wastewater treatment. Through his groundbreaking research at Delft University of Technology, we unlocked the key to harnessing bacteria to form granules, revolutionising the efficiency of biological treatment. Follow the link below to watch the full video and stay tuned for more insights about the transformative potential of Nereda® technology in our upcoming video series! https://ow.ly/khJ250QWCFZ Watch out for our next video in the series where we explain what aerobic granular sludge is and how it is used in our wastewater treatment process. #Nereda #WastewaterTreatment #Innovation

It is always great to come to the Battelle #Chlorinated2024 event. I love the opportunity to see the wonderful work our users are carrying out with our products as well as to meet them face to face which I just don’t get to do often enough. Contaminated water and soils are such a threat to our society, especially in these times where there are more than enough other water challenges, so it is heartening to see the advances being made to deal with #PFaS (forever chemicals) and other contaminants. Now that we are talking PFaS, we can see that new regulations and funding programs are accelerating clean-up efforts, research into remedial technologies via in-situ systems, bioremediation and water (including waste water) treatment. As a conceptual site model focused person, I am glad to hear that customers are saying that is a requirement on nearly all jobs today. In the words of one person I met: “3D is the standard now”. That is good since it’s another step on the road to ensuring that the best value is extracted from all that expensive field data as well as that stakeholder engagement can be lifted to new levels. There were some great examples of models and workflows to keep these models up to date. I also can see that #digitalworkflows are becoming increasingly common. This is really important since it helps reduce data handling errors as well as enabling scientists and engineers to focus on problem solving and not on data manipulation. Seequent is working hard to make sure this is available to all our users as an in-the-box solution. There was also a significant increase in the number of talks and posters presenting High Resolution Site Characterization in order to better understand the site conditions influencing contamination as well as to improve targeting remediation and monitoring efforts. However, amid the optimism, discussions around future challenges like #microplastics loom large This is certainly an area that I will need to look at more in the near future. It is reassuring that a lot of good scientists are trying to get ahead of the ball on the next big challenge be it those microplastics or something else. #3Dmodelling #groundwater #SDG6

My colleague, Graeme Cruickshank, spoke at the House of Lords last week to give evidence to the enquiry into Engineering Biology and it's potential for the future UK economy. Amongst the variance things that were discussed he very succinctly capture the misconceptions associated with scale-up. The soundbite below is 20 seconds, it's worth listening to twice as the message is quite profound if you are on the scale-up journey. #scaleup #engineeringbiology #sustainability CPI
You might be surprised at the biggest challenges engineering biology companies face when looking to scale up in the UK ⬇️ Here’s what Graeme Cruickshank, our Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, had to say when he presented oral evidence on engineering biology before the UK House of Lords Science and Technology Committee last week. Graeme also spoke about the need for specialist infrastructure and dedicated spaces where rigorous testing can be conducted. He emphasised how science and innovation would ultimately benefit if we had: 💷 More flexibility and freedom in how funding grants can be spent 📈 Longer-term funding options with appropriate filters at performance milestones You can watch the full session here: https://lnkd.in/e7zGAH2A Frank Millar Arun Harish Hannah Wade Clare Trippett Amita Randhawa Yvonne Armitage Kris Wadrop High Value Manufacturing Catapult Katherine Bennett CBE #EngineeringBiology | #Biotech | #Biotechnology #LetsInnovateTogether | #Innovation | #DeepTech

#Investing in the #Future of Biology: #Funding the Trillions in Infrastructure. As latent demand for #sustainable #bioproducts grows, the #biomanufacturing industry stands at a crossroads. Achieving commercial-scale production offers the promise of reducing per-unit costs and making bioproducts competitive with traditional manufacturing. However, the substantial investments required for scaling operations, from constructing biofoundries to optimizing strain engineering, present a formidable barrier. This conversation explores the innovative strategies and collaborative efforts needed to overcome this paradox.
