Historic day at #FarnboroughInternational today with UK, France and Germany aerospace & defence trade bodies signing an MOU for a different type of international partnership called ‘Aero Excellence International’ It was great to be invited to witness this moment at the Aerospace Global Forum. So it seems that there is time to compete and there is time to collaborate! But what’s driving this initiative and what is hoped to be achieved? The aerospace sector is highly complex, interconnected and interdependent with disruption in one place having schockwawes across global supply chains. Global competition is fierce. Demand is high and global capacity is low. There are supply chain risks and likelihood of future disruption. An aircraft typically has 3 million parts supplied by 3,200 suppliers. The pandemic, geo-politics, Ukraine, Brexit, protectionism, complexity and global competition coupled with high demand for aircraft has driven these three countries to collaborate to be more resilient and more competitive against the rest of the world. The Airbus supply chain seems to be at the heart of this. The initiative aims to achieve a common language of standards and ways of doing things and will provide a platform for assessment and recognition. Time will tell what this initiative will achieve but it’s certainly different and a major step. #aerospace #manufacturing #supplychain #ukmfg #ukmanufacturing #santandernavigator #santander #manufacturing

Weekly Insights No.4. European #competitiveness, or even more so, working on the disadvantage of European competitiveness, is a current topic in #Europe. This is a particularly exciting question from the perspective of the #defence and #aviation industry, especially in light of the fact that one of the world's two leading aviation industry giants, Airbus, is European, and there are also more European companies among the world's TOP 20 defence OEMS, such as Leonardo, Thales, Airbus Defence and Space and Rheinmetall. The question is whether these manufacturers can contribute to increasing European competitiveness, and if so, how. The answer is clearly yes and the solution is to be found in their #supplychains. Of course, not the way they have done it until now. The weakest point of European defence supply chains is that they are simply slow. From a business perspective, a 5-7-year order book looks good, but this is not a solution for some customers, and they prefer to look for alternative sources. Just think of Polish-South Korean cooperation. Such a deal, for example, is clearly offensive and detrimental to European competitiveness. But business is business. I dare to say that this is not a matter of capacity and knowledge, there is still plenty of that in #Europe that could, or rather should be integrated in the current supply chain. By the way, this is exactly the area that the European Union and the European Commission could influence, albeit cautiously, with their regulatory tools. Of course, that would require market knowledge and expertise, which we are currently awaiting the appearance of. The other area is the aviation industry. The situation is a little different, since, although here too we can see enormous towering backlogs, in contrast to the defenceindustry, the supply chains serving this industry are truly global. In addition, until now, the primary consideration here was cost efficiency, even if OEMs tried to disguise this with other, high-sounding expectations. The European aviation industry, on the other hand, is under constant pressure from increasingly strict European regulations. Time and numbers will show to what extent this serves to increase the competitiveness of the sector. I clearly state on every possible platform that European supplier capacities are not utilized at all, and this is especially true for the #CEEregion. Of course, I do not think that this is the key to competitiveness, but it is certainly a great luxury not to use and exploit the available resources. It would be worth thinking about this. #dans #defenceindustrty #aerospace
