Using language consciously means making compassionate, carefully considered choices about the words you use in a specific context. Who are you writing for? Who are you writing about? What are your goals, and how might history affect the impact of your words? Is anyone being excluded by the words you’ve chosen? It’s about more than just what sounds good; it means being aware of where words come from and how they change over time. Can’t keep up with the rapid evolution of language? I can help you navigate conscious language in your writing. Find out more at buff.ly/3TanC5x. My favorite resource for answering conscious language questions is the Conscious Language Toolkit by Crystal Shelley. And she just updated it today! #ConsciousLanguage #ConsciousLanguageToolkit #AmEditing #WriteIntentionally

I love how clear this graphic is. Word choice matters, as does the orientation of your thought behind those words and their content. We spend a lot of time thinking about points 1 and 2, when we need to also step back and ask ourselves about 3, 4, and 5. Even if your writing is clear, if it perpetuates violence or harm or if it is steeped in a tradition that is considered harmful by some (Hint: that makes it harmful too), then we can do better. And we should. Radical Copyeditor Alex Kapitan talks about consciously using language not just to include (not exclude) but to liberate. So maybe we could add a point 6: Are your words/ideas/phrasings working from a position of agency and liberation for the people, places, and traditions you are discussing? If not, how can we make that happen? #Writing #AmEditing #AcademicWriting #ScholarlyPublishing #Humanities #CopyEditing #LineEditing #ConsciousLanguage

"Everyday Philosophy: Do emojis help or hurt our language? Would you be upset if I called you an eggplant? Key Takeaways Welcome to Everyday Philosophy, the column where I use insights from the history of philosophy to help you navigate the daily dilemmas of modern life. This week, I answer a “question” about the role of emojis in language. To answer Michael, we look at George Orwell’s thoughts on English and Gretchen McCulloch’s analysis of internet language." - BigThink by Johnny Thomson #language #vocabulary #words #writer #writing #writers
