I love how clear this graphic is. Word choice matters, as does the orientation of your thought behind those words and their content. We spend a lot of time thinking about points 1 and 2, when we need to also step back and ask ourselves about 3, 4, and 5. Even if your writing is clear, if it perpetuates violence or harm or if it is steeped in a tradition that is considered harmful by some (Hint: that makes it harmful too), then we can do better. And we should. Radical Copyeditor Alex Kapitan talks about consciously using language not just to include (not exclude) but to liberate. So maybe we could add a point 6: Are your words/ideas/phrasings working from a position of agency and liberation for the people, places, and traditions you are discussing? 7moGreat article, thanks for sharing, and one thing that drives me crazy is the use of said again and again. Yes, there are many other possible words from which to choose. I recommend that writers record a few random conversations and transcribe five minutes of them to get a better grasp of what real conversations sound like and then look like on paper.
