What can a basketball legend 🏀 teach us about running a #startup? Last week, CEO Josh Levy was in #AustinTX at the Ironspring Ventures Annual General Meeting (Ironspring is one of our main investors, and we consider Adam Bridgman, Colleen Konetzke, Ty Findley, Peter J. Holt, Stephanie Volk and their team to be partners ✨ ). There was a great network of built-world stakeholders in attendance from The Haskell Company, Zachry Group, HENSEL PHELPS, DPR Construction, HOLT CAT, Trimble Inc. and more, including Scott Wolfe, Hamzah Shanbari, Andrew Zukoski, Ranjeet Gadhoke, Ankoor Amin, Siavash Mohseni, Kaushal Diwan, Leah Royalty, Chris Stern and Meg Paulus, but there was another special guest in attendance as well… basketball legend Manu Ginobili. 🌟 Manu is a four-time NBA champion, Olympic gold medalist and a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. He played 23 seasons professionally including in Italy and Argentina before joining the NBA. While playing with the San Antonio Spurs for more than 16 years, the team became a dynasty, but Manu had an unconventional situation... He came off the bench rather than start, despite being an all-star caliber player. How did this happen? And how did some of the greatest success of all time follow? 🏀 In this week’s blog, Josh recounts some stories Manu shared during an intimate fireside chat and how they translate from court to company. 🌍 Just witnessed the thrilling 2024 Mixed Relay World Championships! 🏊♂️🚴♀️🏃♂️ This year, the spotlight was on the German team, whose strategic mastery in team composition led them to victory. Combining seasoned athletes with promising new talents proved to be a winning formula, showcasing how diversity in skills and experience can bring about triumph in relay sports. 🤔 It got me thinking about the parallels in the business world, especially in startups and SaaS companies. Much like in triathlons, the success of a project or a company often hinges on assembling the right mix of expertise and fresh perspectives. 📊 Here’s a bit of data to ponder: Teams with diverse skill sets are 35% more likely to outperform their homogeneous counterparts. Diversity isn’t just beneficial; it’s a strategic asset. 👥 Have you experienced a similar synergy in your teams? How do you think strategic team composition influences outcomes in your sector? Let’s discuss how we can apply these lessons from the sports world to enhance our business strategies and team dynamics! #Teamwork #BusinessStrategy #DiversityInSports #MixedRelay #WorldChampionships #SaaS #Startups Discover more tips, insights, and resources by visiting our site at https://lnkd.in/dgZe3i27

Today’s WeeklyLT explores the issue of SOCIETAL SHORTERMISM due to far too many examples that I’ve come across lately, whether it be Individuals/Olympians, Politicians/Countries or Leaders/Companies. This pervasive mindset often boils down to daily decisions & trade-offs, specifically: 1. CHOOSING SHORT-TERM PAIN FOR LONG-TERM GAIN, OR 2. OPTING FOR SHORT-TERM GAIN, WITH AN INCREASING RISK OF LONG-TERM PAIN IF THINGS GO AWRY Some of the recent events have highlighted this issue are: A. Canada Olympic Soccer Team Drone Spying Scandal In Canada, hockey often reigns supreme, but soccer has been gaining popularity. For much of my lifetime, our national soccer teams were largely irrelevant due to the lack of being globally competitive. A turning point came around 2011 when a new coach from overseas was brought in. He was given immense control to revamp the program. Like all competitive sports, the difference between winning & losing is often miniscule. As the video below explains, there likely was years of systemic spying on other team’s practices to gain that small but perhaps significant advantage. This of course is unethical & illegal. We’ll never know if the talent alone was good enough in those prior years. https://lnkd.in/g3-UKyun B. Memories Tainted by Similar Cheating Some of my favorite memories of watching past sporting events, such as the 1988 Olympics with Ben Johnson’s 100m sprint victory or the 1998 Home Run race between Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa, were also marred with controversy. These athletes used illegal substances to gain an unfair competitive advantage, tarnishing their achievements. C. The Long-Term Perspective in Business Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to network with many ex-colleagues, many of whom have been in the workforce longer than I have. I often asked how many successful projects or companies they could recall that were steadfast around long-term positioning & implementing best-practice rather than taking shortcuts for short-term gains (ie, meeting a deadline, a budget, focusing only on their own group, etc.). Unfortunately, most could only recall 1-2 examples throughout their careers. Our corporate structures (with the focus on quarterly results), political systems (4-5 year election cycles), and society as a whole are far too often centered on SHORTERMISM. Yes, our brains have been wired this way due to evolutionary & survival reasons. But times are different now. Instead of adopting a “win at all costs” mentality, lets embrace the mindset of working hard, playing hard & applauding growth & continuous improvement that will position us for the sustained longer-term. Let’s evolve to and demand a more LONG-TERM MINDSET, CHANGE REWARD STRUCTURES and take that moment to think about the trade-offs and potential consequences 5-10 or 50+ years down the road. These are the topics I've been discussing with my kids lately.

Last month, after a whirlwind of meetings, projects and the grind of tropical days, we decided it was high time for a break. What started as a simple idea turned into an epic Open Box Cricket match. The laughter, and the spirited game created a positive ripple effect that resonated throughout the team. In those moments between wickets and under the open sky, our team found more than just a breather. It's amazing how a game can bring out the best in everyone, fostering teamwork and injecting a fresh burst of energy into our dynamic. As an entrepreneur I believe it isn't just about business milestones; it's about building a family within your team, creating memories, and finding joy in shared victories, on and off the field. #teambuilding #memories

Our founder, Hamza Mudassir, had a riveting chat with Anthony Rose, yesterday on how disruptive innovation can be leveraged to take down goliaths of an industry. He challenged the OG definition of disruption by the legendary Clayton Christensen and spoke about new strategies that neo-disruptors need to employ in 2024 to win. They also discussed a start-up's journey from selling products to creating platforms, navigating emergent ecosystems, and how to thrive on each step. Mindset:- The Game-Changer for Grassroots Football in India 🏆 In the evolving landscape of Indian football, the journey of a grassroots player is more than just talent development—it's a mental game. As India invests heavily in grassroots programs like AIFF's Blue Cubs under the Vision 2047 roadmap, the potential to create a football culture is immense. But the missing link? Mindset. Why Mindset Matters:- ▶️ Resilience Over Results: Grassroots football is a marathon, not a sprint. Players face challenges ranging from limited facilities to intense competition. A growth mindset—seeing failure as feedback—can distinguish future stars from those who quit early. ▶️ Intrinsic Motivation: External rewards fade, but passion endures. Programs must nurture self-driven players who love the game beyond fame or financial gain. This is the secret of global football hubs. ▶️ Adaptability and Discipline: Indian football is diversifying, with increasing competition and opportunities at state, national, and even international levels. Players must stay adaptable and disciplined to navigate this dynamic ecosystem. Recent Developments:- ▶️ The Blue Cubs initiative aims to engage 35 million children by 2026, laying a foundation of both skills and life values. ▶️ AIFF’s recent grassroots strategy includes multi-dimensional programs with schools, clubs, and NGOs. Yet, its success hinges on players' mental strength and their ability to commit long-term. Call To Action:- ▶️ Coaches, parents, and mentors—let's emphasize mental conditioning alongside technical skills. Foster an environment where young players understand that their biggest opponent isn’t the rival team but the limits they set for themselves. ▶️ Together, we can build a resilient, passionate generation that doesn’t just play football but lives it. #IndianFootball #GrassrootsFootball #PlayerMindset #AllIndiaFootballFederation #BlueCubs #Vision2047
