Asthma development is associated with low mucosal IL-10 during viral infections in early life. First author: Mathias Elsner Melgaard; corresponding author: Klaus Bønnelykke Read the article here: doi.org/10.1111/all.16276 This study investigated virus-specific immune mediator levels in the upper airways during respiratory illnesses in early life and the association with later asthma development. The airway immune profile during viral respiratory illnesses was characterized by high levels of type 1 and regulatory immune mediators and low levels of type 2 and type 17 immune mediators. Children later developing asthma had a reduced regulatory (IL-10) immune mediator level during viral respiratory illnesses in early life. #Allergy_journal Read more articles published in #Allergy on #asthma here: https://lnkd.in/dCVQJRc

In Asthma Awareness Month, and among all the publicity around this chronic, distressing disease, it is worth reflecting on some basic facts: · Asthma is a long term, chronic disease, damaging human health around the world · Over a quarter of a billion people suffer from asthma · The global costs are in the hundreds of billions of dollars every year, worldwide · Approximately 17% of asthmatics are “difficult-to-treat” and require frequent hospitalization · Asthma kills over 450,000 people a year · The cost of treatments can make it difficult for many asthmatics to access proper care · Though the symptoms can be controlled, there is no cure Clearly, we need to do our best to to reduce the burden of this chronic, damaging disease. But what can we do? Well, one key element is reducing exposure to the causes of asthma, and to the triggers that can bring on a severe, and possibly life threatening, attack Cut the attacks, cut the misery, cut the deaths. #asthma #allergy #chronic #dustmites #housedustmites #aeris #aerisbiotech #aerisbiotechnologies

Divergent sensory pathways of sneezing and coughing Sneezing and coughing are frequently associated with allergies and respiratory viral infections. This study reveals that sneezing and coughing are initiated by discrete sensory receptors and transmitted by divergent neuropathways, offering drug targets for managing pathological sneezing and coughing. The researchers demonstrate that only one population (MrgprC11+MrgprA3−) mediates sneezing responses to variety of stimulants but does not mediate coughing (despite innervating trachea), although the nasal mucosa is innervated by several discrete populations of sensory neurons. The authors also found a distinct sensory population (somatostatin [SST+]) mediates coughing but not sneezing, thus revealing a distinction between sneezing and coughing. The researchers also found that at the circuit level, sneeze and cough signals are transmitted and modulated by divergent neuropathways. #ScienceMission #ScienceNewsHighlights https://lnkd.in/gSz63eyY

May is a big month for health awareness and advocacy in the US. Here are just a few of the invisible health conditions we’ll be recognizing in May: → Long COVID → Mental Health → Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) → Fibromyalgia → Lupus → Lyme Disease → Allergy/Asthma This month, let’s deepen our understanding of these chronic immunological and neurological diseases, and discover effective ways to manage them. Together, we can support our loved ones facing unseen challenges, helping them gain courage for the uncertainty that these diseases bring to their lives.💙 #NationalFibromyalgiaAwarenessDay #mecfsawareness #longcovid #lupusawarenessmonth

Today is Global Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (#CRSwNP) Awareness Day. To celebrate, AAFA published a new report called “Life with Nasal Polyps: The Patient Experience and Opportunities to Improve Care in the U.S.” https://lnkd.in/gfmEn4zN Chronic rhinosinusitis is an inflammation of the inner lining of the nose and sinuses for over 3 months. Chronic sinusitis can exist with or without nasal polyps, which are soft, painless, and non-cancerous growths that develop in the sinuses and nose. This report highlights the current state of care in the United States for people living with CRSwNP, including challenges and barriers to: ➡️ timely diagnosis ➡️ quality medical care ➡️ effective treatments ➡️ access to resources for CRSwNP These challenges also present opportunities to address the unmet needs and improve future care for people living with CRSwNP in the United States. AAFA hopes this new report will serve to highlight the voices of people living with CRSwNP and their caregivers, and inspire action from key stakeholders to address unmet needs for CRSwNP patients. #RespiratoryHealth #Asthma #Allergies #Rhinitis #PublicHealth #Research EUFOREA - European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases
