Wanna hear one advice for successful networking at events that none of the world's marketing gurus will give you? 💣
Just the best icebreaker ever? 🗻
No, really. I'm pretty sure you've never gotten this advice before.
Imagine a big event—say, 10,000 people—you're new to the industry and the country, and you want to meet as many people from your industry as possible.
What do you do if you're shy and timid and don't know anyone who can introduce you?
If you started randomly jumping in front of complete strangers, asking them to exchange contacts, you'd probably get a one-way ticket to the loony bin. 🙃
So here's the advice:
A fanfare!!!
💡 Wear a Pacman shirt. 💡
❓ You don't believe me, do you? Is it that easy?
Like a true marketer, I'll beat you with a case study based on real data.
Me at the HubSpot #INBOUND24 conference in Boston. I don't know anyone.
I wore my favorite Pacman shirt on the first day of the event.
In one day, I received 17 times a compliment for my awesome shirt, and those 17 compliments turned into 8 enjoyable conversations about marketing that ended with an exchange of contacts on the event app and one potential collaboration.
The next day, I washed my shirt and had to wear another one. I'm not a 🐷...
I only exchanged contacts with 4 people at the afterparty, which I had to actively reach out to based on the company name written on their badge. Otherwise, nothing.
On the third day, I wore the Pacman shirt again. Got 12 compliments, started 6 conversations that ended with an exchange of contacts. (I'd rather hide one caress from a beautiful young lady, she probably reeealy liked the shirt). 😁
See? The data speaks clearly. No bulls**t.
If you want successful event networking, get a Pacman shirt.
Or actually, rather not because then I wouldn't be the original one...
So... Well... I don't know, actually, do whatever you want, as long as you enjoy it. 🖖
