Imagine continuous shock monitoring the way Continuous Glucose Monitoring works: with a patch on an arm. “What we are developing is a sensing technology which when in contact with a fluid, would actually measure the concentration of one specific biomarker of interest,” Esmeralda Megally, the CEO of Xsensio says on today’s X-Health.show. “What we want to do in the Lab-on-Skin is not just one single biomarker but a multiplex system so that in the same wearable device we can have different sensors that might all have the same functioning principle but what they differ would be the functional layer on top to make it sensitive to a configuration of different biomarkers that are important for that specific population patient population at a specific moment”. After venturing briefly into wellness wearables, they recognized a strong medical need and now, with the support of Mayo Clinic and collaboration with CHUV, they focused on continuous shock monitoring, to better predict and treat septic shock. Like glucose, the biomarker, changes rapidly. The tricky part: identify the norms in the interstitial fluid. There are ones for blood, not interstitial fluid. While the risk of avalanches in the Norwegian mountains is now low, there is an avalanche of data hitting providers from wearables, implantables and imaging devices. Dr Abhishek Deshmukh discussed this challenge in the context of atrial fibrillation in an interview at the GE HealthCare booth during #ACC24. How we aggregate, link, analyze, leverage and process this data will be instrumental to what insights we can gain from this data to impact patient outcomes. More to come.
