Great to see some push back by some governments against the ultra fast, high polluting brands Temu & Shein who are wreaking havoc on SMEs. Reality is that it’s not a “fair competition” & govts can fix so quickly by adjusting the import tax loophole. “Indonesia ordered Temu to be taken down from app stores in October, a move it said would protect the country’s smaller merchants. Last week, Vietnam threatened to ban Temu and Shein by the end of the month.” What’s shocking is that it’s taking so long when you see these stats & how industries & livelihoods are being destroyed; “Nearly 2,000 Thai factories across all industries closed and more than 50,000 workers lost their jobs in the last financial year, Reuters reported, in part due to greater Chinese competition and higher costs.” The EUs EcoDesign for Sustainable Product Design Regulations and adding a #digitalpassport cannot come fast enough to create a #circulareconomy CIRPASS-2 - Digital Product Passport We are ready; Reach out to learn more about Global Circular Network. Regulation is the Only Solution! 🌍⚖️ While I am not in favor of protectionism, we have reached a critical point where massive companies like Temu and Shein exploit flaws in #ecommerce regulations to disrupt fair competition. Innovation is essential, yet it’s being leveraged by these fast-fashion giants who use their financial power to gain an unfair advantage. They not only utilize #AI to speed up development but also to scout for innovations and copy successful products, disregarding the hard work of smaller, innovative companies. They profit from the very gaps in regulations that allow them to operate without the same scrutiny smaller businesses face. These issues lead to unfair profits and an unequal playing field, as larger companies develop technologies that capitalize on inconsistencies in testing and product quality standards. 💼🚫 Only by ensuring that profits are generated through fair business practices can we guarantee equal access to technology for all. Furthermore, when regulations are implemented, they must be straightforward and accessible for everyone. Complex regulations can overwhelm small businesses, making compliance difficult and further reinforcing the advantages of larger firms. 📊 Cross-border e-commerce can thrive only when all new product and pricing regulations— environmental, recycling, payment of duties, or quality standards—are consistently applied. Regulations like the #EUDR, #CBAM, and varying country-specific rules on recycling logos and recyclability illustrate how complicated requirements can pose significant challenges for smaller companies, putting them at a disadvantage compared to their larger competitors. 🌐📋 Governments must act decisively. Stronger regulation is necessary, but it should be designed with simplicity in mind to ensure that all businesses—regardless of size—can comply easily. Indonesia's recent decision exemplifies this approach, focusing on fair practices rather than protectionism. 🇮🇩 Yes, we need competition, and we should avoid trade wars, but we must ensure that everyone plays by the same rules. 🤝 Let’s push for fair regulations that support innovation while ensuring a level playing field for all. 💪✨ #fair #regulation #sustainable #sustainability #indonesia #shein #temu

How Temu Became the Trendsetter in E-Commerce Logistics - Jing Yang from The Information "You can probably argue that Temu is now the trendsetter instead. Their local work warehouse, which some call the semi-managed model as compared to the fully managed model, which is the direct shipping from China model, actually inspired Shein and Ali-Express. They both have done the same. We have seen that different countries around the world have reacted quite differently to this, right? We'll get into the controversy in the U.S. a little bit, but I'm sure you're aware that in France, for example, they're trying to do some sort of "fast fashion penalty." A similar thing is happening in Brazil, where they have already passed a law mandating that lower-level imported e-commerce parcels have to pay additional tax. I think similar things also happening in Thailand, I believe it's being discussed, right? It's definitely going to be interesting, but then Obviously, we are all consumers at the end of the day. Additional competition and an innovation in business model definitely eventually benefits consumers." ⛔ Exposing Price-Cutting Tactics Causing Market Disruption ⛔ Recently, Temu—a Chinese e-commerce platform—has garnered significant global attention in retail with its “shockingly low prices” strategy. However, behind the appeal of affordability, many countries have begun to issue consumer warnings regarding Temu’s product quality and business practices. #temu #warning #fastfashion

Very interesting and counter intuitive to the novice eye. We all know that #Vietnam is the destination of choice for Chinese factories to lower their labour cost. However one needs to look at the complete #supplychain and total cost of the product - in many cases China dominates from raw materials to logistics, #ecosytem and scale to deliver the final product. #manufactoring
Chinese e-commerce platforms are facilitating an influx of low-cost products into Vietnam, tormenting Vietnamese enterprises. Chinese products sold in Vietnam via Temu, Taobao, and 1688 are challenging Vietnamese enterprises in terms of price, quality, and service. If Vietnamese businesses cannot rise over this challenge, they may begin to fall behind. Vietnamese consumers are turning to Chinese products due to their low cost. At a 'VND19,000 [US$0.76] and below store' on Phan Van Tri Street in Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, Duong Thuy, a local resident, said that she has trouble saying 'no' to such low prices. Goods at the store, which include porcelain bowls, household appliances, and fashion accessories, are priced lower than similar Vietnamese items at local supermarkets thanks to cheap import costs when buying in bulk from China.

Very interesting development as reported in today's South China Morning Post SCMP that the Indonesian government has banned China's online marketplace Temu claiming it would devastate small and medium sized businesses. The government has been acting tough for some time now with fast fashion and online marketplaces. It also banned TikTok Shop last October because it said it failed to comply with the law and regulations to protect smaller businesses. TikTok Shop have since had the restrictions lifted after it acquired Tokopedia, Indonesia's second biggest shopping platform but also by agreeing to abide by key regulations. This is just the latest in a growing battle between these massive online marketplaces, governments, regulators and retailers. In an interview just a few days ago, Julian Dunkerton, CEO of Superdry said that Shein, the ultra low price, fast fashion retailer exploits UK tax loopholes that excludes low value items from import duty and VAT. It means that Shein "is not working on a level playing field" said Dunkerton and called on the Government to act to ensure they pay "the right amount in a fair way" or other businesses will go bankrupt. The European Union has already declared that it is looking at ways of taxing the surge in low value items being imported into Europe. Low value imports into the EU have grown over 60% in two years. This issue is only going to become bigger and louder. And yet in the middle of it is the consumer who seems very happy to shift their spending towards these platforms. It has just been reported in Retail Week that Shein's UK sales have broken £1.5 billion and profits have doubled. And when the Indonesian government banned TikTok Shop last year, albeit temporarily, over 2 million people were using it to sell on the platform. World Retail Congress #wrc2025

Chinese retail giants Shein and Temu have harnessed social commerce to amplify their market presence, reshaping traditional retail models. 🛒📦 As they expand globally, small package shipments allow them to bypass tariff regulations to offer lower prices and convenience to a growing consumer base. This raises concerns about fair competition in the retail sector, product standards, and environmental impact. Western retailers advocate for stricter regulations to ensure fairness and consumer safety, urging platforms to adhere to international standards. Whose side are you on? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gaz9hPMC #SocialCommerce #Ecommerce #SolMinionDevelopment

**Are ultra low-cost e-tailers like Shein and Temu undermining the EU's retail landscape?** The European Union is contemplating a significant shift as it grapples with an influx of cheap packages from Asian online retailers such as AliExpress, Shein, and Temu. These ultra low-cost e-tailers have sparked concerns over safety and the authenticity of imported goods—issues that cannot be overlooked any longer. With reports suggesting a potential implementation of package handling fees or import taxes to manage this growing concern, consumers and businesses alike are left to ponder the implications.
