On Trump, unhappiness, and what Durkheim terms "anomie" - you won't read a better article (from 2023) on the failure of liberals to win big elections, and our obsession that delivering economic progress is the be all and end all in changing voting behaviour. Trump is operating on a different level in getting to the core of people's anger and unhappiness: “In 2016, I declared, ‘I am your voice.’ Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed: I am your retribution.” What do liberals need to do? - Tell simple, true stories about cause and effect of discontent, make sure you have a villain and name them, and start focusing on people's lived experiences: isolation, social disintegration, disorder and danger. - Focus on community and building connections with the working classes, include people and get out of the technocratic mindset of doing good things TO people, and do things WITH them. And above all, focus on emotions and not economics. The Harris campaign was highly professional and well run. It was also wholly inadequate response to authoritarianism. You can see the UK Labour government doing exactly the same thing and being out of power once again.

I am not sure I have any clear answers but rather an observation: This is the year of elections and most parties in power have struggled to increase their support. Some might still be in government (India & S Africa), but in many other countries, there has been a shift (US, UK, NL, regional level in DE etc). Price increases have had an impact not only on the poorest citizens but middle classes have also felt the squeeze. Add to this many different national challenges contributing to citizens' mistrust in governments' ability to improve their lives.
