Precision #medicine allows to better #prediction And in this case thanks to researchers in #Spain specifically in #Barcelona at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau where lead investigator Juan Fortea, MD PhD and a group of top researchers (most of them tagged in the image) have found some breaking news regarding one of the top chart illnesses of the country: #Alzheimer The study published by Nature Portfolio (find the link in comments 👇🏼) suggests that people with two copies of the gene variant APOE4 might represent a new genetic form of the illness. More than 30 years ago it was known that this gene was associated with a higher Alzheimer risk, ”now we know that practically all people that have this gene will develop it. It’s important because they are around 2%-3% of total population” says Dr. Fortea. The average age of development of the illlnes with these 2 copies is around 65 years old. This takes us back to #prevention as having these two copies not only increases risk but also early apparition of the illness. Once again, early detection is key in order to improve #healthy population and decrease public health cost, as neurodegenerative illnesses are already at the top expenditure of NHS. Congrats to this amazing research team and hopefully this will get more resources for the very much needed R&D in the country and for the world 🌎
