It's election season and one of the things that has frustrated me in recent years is the lack of leadership at the highest levels in designing effective policies. We need policies that are aligned with a clear political vision and that solve real problems. Unfortunately, far too often, we get policy platforms that are designed to win votes by appealing to identity politics. Take, for example, Labour's proposal to impose VAT on private/independent school fees. While there are real challenges in the public education sector and a real opportunity to build excellence in the UK, this is not a policy that is well-calibrated to solve the problems or capitalize on the solutions. We can tell because Labour has not put forward a proposal addressing how additional funds will be allocated. Thank you to the Financial Times for publishing my thoughts on this topic.
