📢 The recently released 2024 Sustainable Development Report (#SDR2024) by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network shows that globally, only 16% of the #SDG targets are on track to be achieved by 2030. 👀 The first 17 places are ranked by European countries. While Germany faces significant challenges with Goal 1 (No #Poverty), which is understandable as most companies don't integrate this goal into their strategies and sustainability reports, surprisingly France, China, and Russia are performing well in this area. Notably, Israel excels in "Good Health and Well-being" 🏥, and Ukraine ranks highly in "Reduced Inequalities" ⚖️, Belarus is leading the way with Goal 6, "Clean Water and Sanitation" 🚰. Something to dig deeper? 🌍 It's disheartening to see that our world map is predominantly red for SDG 16 "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions," with Iceland 🙏 being the sole exception. 🚨 It's alarming that Europe is struggling with "Quality #Education" 🎓, except for Croatia, Moldova, and Georgia, while China is leading in this sector (along with UAE, Thailand, Vietnam, Argentina, and Peru)! 🌍 SDG2 (Zero Hunger) is the most alarming as no one from 193 UN member states has achieved it. 🔍 We need to prioritize ALL SDGs without cherry-picking ❗ Only through a #HOLISTIC approach can we, as a global community, achieve all the targets. EAST AND SOUTH ASIAN COUNTRIES, particularly the ASEAN countries, are making SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS on SDG achievement. #thailand ranks first, followed by #vietnam, according to the 2024 Sustainable Development Report (SDR) released in June (https://lnkd.in/grrXdApM). The report was written by a group of independent experts at the SDG Transformation Center, an initiative of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The SDG Index score is presented on a scale of 0 to 100 and can be interpreted as a percentage towards optimal performance on the SDGs. Other key findings highlighted in the 2024 SDR include: ✅ SDG progress has STALLED SINCE 2020. Based on the rate of progress since the SDGs were adopted by the 193 UN member states in 2015, NONE of the 17 SDGs will be achieved by 2030. ✅ On average, ONLY 16% of SDG targets are ON TRACK to be met globally by 2030, with the remaining 84% showing limited progress or a reversal of progress. ✅ Sustainable development remains a long-term INVESTMENT CHALLENGE. Reforming the global financial architecture is more urgent than ever. ✅ Global challenges REQUIRE GLOBAL COOPERATION. Barbados ranks the highest in its commitment to UN-based multilateralism; the US ranks last. ✅ SDG targets related to FOOD and LAND SYSTEMS are particularly OFF-TRACK. The SDR evaluates three possible pathways towards achieving sustainable food and land systems. Many OPPORTUNITIES for #innovators, #entrepreneurs, #startups and #smallbusiness to develop solutions aimed getting our planet on track to reach SDG targets by 2030, in particular the 16 targets related to FOOD SECURITY, CLIMATE MITIGATION, BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION, and WATER QUALITY. We are not on track. According to the SDSN Sustainable Development Report 2024 "only 16 percent of the SDG targets are on track to be met globally by 2030, with the remaining 84 percent showing limited progress or a reversal of progress". We have regressed in: 🥞 Obesity rate (under SDG 2) 🗞 Press freedom (under SDG 16) 🦍 Red List Index (under SDG 15) 🚜 Sustainable nitrogen management (under SDG 2) 🐣 Life expectancy at birth (under SDG 3) While "Globally, 600 million people will still suffer from hunger by 2030" mostly in poorer and vulnerable countries, obesity is increasing. 🇪🇺 European countries rank top of the list of those doing well to achieve the SDGs, with the Nordics first, followed by Germany and France. There are 18 European countries amongst the 25 highest ranking countries. This should also be a reminder for some of us of the luck and privilege of being born in the European Union. 📉 Meanwhile "the poorest and most vulnerable countries, including the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), are not catching up", in fact, they're progressing at a pace slower than pre-pandemic levels. This report is just another one, among dozens every year, that reminds us that we really need to change. As I never get tired of saying, "sustainable development remains a long-term investment challenge. Reforming the global financial architecture is more urgent than ever.". We can no longer stand a financial system that is rewarded by "growth" when the way we measure growth is totally decoupled from well being, sustainability, equity or justice. We knew it already. However, even these countries face SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES in achieving several SDGs, especially SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), partly driven by UNSUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION patterns and NEGATIVE INTERNATIONAL SPILLOVER effects. #thailand ranks first in ASEAN and third in Asia. Countries at the bottom of the SDG Index ranking tend to be impacted by military conflicts, security issues, and political or socio-economic instability.
