Tomorrow is Election Day, and New York City SHRM is here to support you, your team, and your workplace. This important moment can create uncertainty within our communities, and as HR leaders, it’s essential that we facilitate discussions that honor diverse perspectives, ensuring all employees feel respected and heard. Here are five actionable strategies you can implement to cultivate a positive and inclusive environment: 1. 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬: Establish clear guidelines for respectful communication. Consider introducing a “pause and reflect” rule, encouraging employees to take a moment before responding to foster thoughtful dialogue. 2. 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬: Emphasize shared goals and values, such as teamwork and mutual respect. Remind employees that, despite differing viewpoints, everyone contributes to a unified workplace culture. 3. 𝐄𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: Promote an active listening approach by inviting team members to summarize or acknowledge the speaker’s points before sharing their own. This practice reduces misunderstandings and promotes empathy. 4. 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬: Designate specific times or virtual spaces for open dialogue on election-related topics. Make participation optional and ensure that discussions are moderated to maintain respect. 5. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬: Make sure employees are aware of emotional support resources, such as counseling or wellness programs, which can be particularly helpful for those feeling stressed or anxious. Thank you to all HR leaders who foster these values and guide respectful discussions during this time. NYC SHRM stands with you and supports your efforts to create a thriving and inclusive workplace.

💭 Well-being Prioritizing well-being in the workplace isn't about sacrificing productivity, performance, or results. It's about creating an environment where people can truly thrive and fostering a space where individuals feel respected, supported, and encouraged to grow. Rather than viewing well-being as a detractor, we need to recognize it as a catalyst for unlocking the full potential of individuals and teams. When employees feel valued and cared for, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and committed to their work. This leads to higher levels of creativity, better problem-solving abilities, and increased productivity 📈 Investing in employee wellbeing also results in lower turnover rates and reduced absenteeism, saving organizations significant costs associated with recruitment and training. Moreover, a focus on well-being enhances the company's reputation, making it an attractive place for top talent 💼 Summing up, in today's competitive landscape, organizations that prioritize well-being are more likely to sustain long-term success. By fostering a supportive and nurturing environment, we ensure that our teams are not only productive but also genuinely invested in the success of the organization 💯 #WorkplaceWellbeing #EmployeeEngagement #Unicorn #OrganizationalSuccess #Career #Community #ProfesionalDevelopment #Leadership #Business #Hr #CompanyCulture #EmployeeGrowth #WorkplaceHealth #ResilientWorkforce #TalentRetention #SustainableSuccess #LivingAviation

This morning I cohosted a post-election roundtable discussion for HR Leaders with Andrew Bartlow and Ariel Fink (thank you both!) and below is my recap. #hr #peopleleaders #humanresources #empathy #support #mentalhealth #community #operations #finance #together
Earlier today, the StartupExperts Community hosted a virtual roundtable discussion on supporting employees in the aftermath of the contentious 2024 presidential election. 25 HR leaders from around the world joined the 1-hour facilitated session to listen to each other's concerns, share strategies, and discuss how to support others. The conversation surfaced several important themes and action items HR Leaders navigating this sensitive time: 1️⃣ Separate Personal from Professional: As leaders, it's crucial to take a step back and ask "What can we do to best support our organization in meeting its goals?" rather than letting personal political views influence decisions. 2️⃣ Prioritize Neutral Communications: Focus messaging on shared goals, values and professional conduct rather than taking partisan stances. Maintain an impartial tone. 3️⃣ Lead with Empathy: Approach this situation with compassion, understanding that employees are processing a range of complex emotions. Make space for open dialogue. 4️⃣ Practice Active Listening: Make time for 1-on-1 conversations to truly hear concerns and respond accordingly. Give people permission to take necessary time off. PTO exists for a reason and mental health is important. 5️⃣ Model Self-Care: As the emotional toll of this period affects leaders too, be sure to prioritize your own wellbeing so you can effectively support your team. Amidst the challenges of this divisive political climate, the group emphasized the importance of centering organizational objectives and employee wellness. By coming together to share experiences and best practices, these HR leaders left the session equipped with actionable strategies to guide their companies through this delicate time. The StartupExperts community is grateful to Andrew Bartlow, Ariel Fink, and Jesse Freese for their thoughtful facilitation of this important discussion. #peopleleaders #humanresources #HR #mentalhealth #wellbeing #peopleops #employee #selfcare

Earlier this week, Gallup's findings revealed a troubling trend: while “quiet quitting” may be on the decline, employee wellbeing in the U.S. continues to deteriorate, with significant consequences for business performance. Employees who are not thriving tend to miss more work due to health issues and are more likely to look for new opportunities. This decline in well-being underscores the crucial role that leaders play in shaping the work environment and, ultimately, the success of their organizations. What’s clear from Gallup's State of the Global Workplace report is that meaningful work is key to employee satisfaction. In fact, 88% of engaged employees reported feeling a lot of enjoyment the previous day. This shows that the power of leadership goes beyond driving results — it’s about creating an environment where people feel seen, heard, and valued. Leaders who intentionally connect with their teams and acknowledge their contributions create a culture that fosters thriving individuals. When people feel seen, they know their presence matters. When they feel heard, their ideas are considered and respected. When they feel valued, they are more likely to show up, engage, and contribute at their highest potential. The strength of a leader today lies in their ability to create an environment of psychological safety and mutual respect. It’s not just about pushing for high performance — it’s about ensuring that people are supported and feel recognized as individuals. Leaders who cultivate this sense of belonging help protect employee well-being, which directly impacts productivity, reduces turnover, and enhances business outcomes. Gallup’s research reinforces the idea that when employees find joy and fulfillment in their work, they are more likely to remain engaged and committed. Meaningful work doesn’t just boost well-being — it becomes the driving force behind an organization’s long-term success. Leadership is about far more than hitting metrics. It’s about making people feel valued and seen in ways that support both their personal wellbeing and their professional growth. That’s the kind of leadership that leads to both thriving employees and thriving businesses. #Leadership #EmployeeWellbeing #EmployeeEngagement #WorkplaceCulture #Gallup #LeadershipDevelopment
