But more importantly, it was energizing and validating. -- I was in the middle of the most hellish year of the financial rescue work I was doing not only for our own clients, but for all of their friends and my bookkeeping colleagues and on my blog, just to try to keep small businesses from imploding (which would allow chains to move in and completely reshape the landscape of our communities). And it was stressful and exhausting and I had no way of knowing whether it was going to make a difference in the end or not. Receiving this award -- being recognized for what I was doing, and going through (I certainly am aware I was not the only one, but I only know how to tell my own story), and feeling SEEN... it definitely put some gas in the tank that was sorely needed at the time. Women-led firms in the US grew by 58% since 2007, compared to businesses overall at 12% and contributing over $3 trillion in economic impact. But, Loans to women make up only about 4% of all commercial loan dollars nationwide. A 2020 survey found that women are nearly 18% less likely to have their loan applications approved than men. 👉🏾 The system—or rather, the creators and upholders of the system —don’t just fear powerful women. They fear what happens when those women start creating power structures of their own. 👩🏽 🏛️🗼 For me Monday always kicks off with a frenzy of thoughts. Today, as I was dropping my children off at school, I found myself reflecting on a swirl of powerful narratives I encountered over the weekend: the Martha Stewart documentary I watched on Saturday, the piece I’m writing for Corporate Knights on DEI backlash, Kamala Harris’s historic run for the presidency, Robert Reich's article on Lina Khan at the FTC, and the relentless fight of the Fearless Fund founders. What connects all these stories? It’s not just these women's ambition or their power—it’s the system’s visceral reaction to their success. Each of these women dared to build something new, something that doesn’t fit into the neatly controlled boxes of the status quo. Martha Stewart’s rise wasn’t just about homemaking; it was about creating a business empire that defied expectations. Kamala Harris isn’t just running for office; she’s reshaping what leadership looks like. Lina Khan is challenging Big Tech’s stranglehold, and the Fearless Fund is carving out space for Black women entrepreneurs. It’s not just about women in power; it’s about the power women are creating. The system resists not because it fears losing control over women—but because it fears losing control, period. In 2024, women entrepreneurs are showing a significant presence in the franchising sector, with 39% starting new franchise locations and 9% investing in existing ones. Women have become key players in the franchise industry, being 17% more likely to own a franchise compared to the main study, showcasing their increasing prominence and success in this field.
