My inbox frequently pings with announcements of new, cutting-edge data dashboard offerings. Each promises a revolution in how schools handle data, showcasing a dazzling arrays of charts, graphs, and numbers. Yet, each one seems to miss a vital element of the puzzle: How is the data actionable? The allure of these dashboards lies in their sophisticated designs and the vast amount of data they present. But there is the issue that is common to them all: an overemphasis on data display without clear pathways to action. Compounding this challenge is the fact that many of these dashboards are produced by technology experts whose understanding of educational environments is often limited. While they are adept at creating impressive visualisations, they often lack the nuanced perspective that educators, who are familiar with the intricacies of schools and pupil-learning, bring to the table. The result is a product that, while technically advanced, may not resonate with the needs and contexts of actual classrooms. The true challenge lies not in the collection of data but in its interpretation and application. A dashboard can display countless metrics, but without the insights from educators these metrics can end up being little more than decorative. The real value of data lies not in its quantity but in its ability to provoke change and improvement. The emphasis on flashy data presentations can lead to a phenomenon I call 'analysis paralysis', where educators and administrators, already inundated with a multitude of responsibilities, feel overwhelmed by the volume of data and unsure of where to focus their efforts. This can divert attention away from critical thinking about the data's implications for teaching and learning. Additionally, the focus on surface-level metrics may encourage a narrow view of student success, prioritising quantifiable outcomes over holistic development. It is important that we prioritise the development of dashboards that not only display data but also provide the space for teachers to consider how to use this information to make informed decisions. By doing so, we can ensure that data serves as a tool for enhancement rather than a source of confusion, truly empowering educators and students alike to reach their fullest potential. #datadriven #catchingthemiddle. #educationalleadership

So, an interesting thought occurred to me on the drive into work this morning... Anyone who knows me, knows that I am always banging on about why data is a business function (rather than purely technical), and why data needs a seat at the top table (alongside technology) in order to drive digital and data transformation, improve outcomes, add value... yada, yada, yada! The analogy I have always used to explain the symbiotic relationship between Data and IT is the concept of the bucket and water brilliantly described by Caroline Carruthers... but is it possible to come up with an alternative explanation, that speaks directly to education? Well, how about this... Q: What is a MAT? A: A collection of schools Q: What is a school? A: A collection of buildings Q: What is teaching and learning? A: What happens inside a school (though it can take place outside) Q: Who is responsible for school buildings? A: The Director of Estates/Facilities Manager... Q: Who is responsible for teaching and learning? A: The Director of Education/DH Curriculum... I.e. the person who is in charge of managing these buildings, is not in charge of what happens inside them... Q: What is technology? A: A collection of systems and software Q: What is data? A: What is stored on these systems (though it can be stored outside) Q: Who is responsible for Technology? A: The CIO/CTO or Director/Head of IT Q: Who is responsible for Data? A: ???? I.e. the person who is in charge of managing these systems, is not necessarily the right person to be in charge of what is stored on them... Discuss.

Collecting data and picking up on trends in behaviour and students' learning allows teachers to make data-driven decisions and take early action to support students. There are a few key challenges that teachers experience when trying to make data-driven decisions including a lack of direction with what data to collect and the confidence to draw useful insights from the data. Teachers understand they are not data analysts and they don’t have the time to collect and analyse large amounts of data, but it is important to find solutions that can simplify the process for them. It is important to evaluate a school’s performance on an ongoing basis, but we need to make sure it is done authentically using data driven decision making. With strategic and authentic support, organisations transform and improve when coached, mentored and led, focussed on key performance indicators. Ideally decisions should be data driven. Although there may be some areas of school performance easily monitored and measured eg. Financial Performance, there are a number of areas that are tougher to review, reveal and improve. There are also traps and misleading data that can confuse you. Michael Fullan speaks about the need for meaningful systems of data collection in his book Putting Faces on the Data. We need to “build the bridge from data collection to improved instruction.” Students are people—not data. Assessment data can bury you or give you focused information on how to reach every student. The same applies for data that informs the business side of running schools. It is often more than what the data first presents to understand the full picture.
