The drop shot - used to devastating effect by Carlos Alcaraz at this year’s Wimbledon.  WHY?  Use it to tire an opponent, to vary the rhythm of play and to bring a baseliner to the net. WHEN? Often played off a short ball (one that lands inside or around the service line area). Playing it off a deep ball is difficult. Even if you play it well, your opponent has lots of time to react, since it is a soft shot travelling a long distance.  Use sparingly for maximum effect. HOW? Focus on hitting the ball gently.  Some players make the mistake of attempting to hit it with a lot of slice. To get heavy slice you must swing at the ball, and swinging gives you too much power.  Prepare as you would for a normal groundstroke  - “disguise it” – to take your opponent by surprise.

Two teams of children - called Track Attackers and Streamline Sneakers - each designed and developed an F1 car to take part in the competition. They won the regional heats but just missed out on the top step of the podium at the national final event earlier this week. The teams had a little bad luck with false starts and a fire alarm going off, but don’t worry, we’re currently building a legal case to find out which one of our opposition teachers sabotaged us.* To get to the finals is a fantastic achievement. The main thing is that the kids had a great day out; they learned a lot; and are already thinking about their futures. Only the mathematically unobservant would say such, only someone comparing income to assets would say such – this is not even comparing apples to oranges, or even comparing apples to tennis balls. To muse on being worth more dead than alive is to compare income to assets, it would be like to compare apples to motor cars. No one the likes of you or me is worth more than alive.
