Recruiters - voicemails are a simple way to boost your outreach. Though not when used on their own (as the response rates are crazy low.) But instead by pairing a voicemail with an email you’ll see a strong uplift in your email response rate. Which for a 10 second voicemail makes them well worthwhile (especially when 90% + of your cold calls go to voicemail.) Try the example below and track any change in your positive reply rate: “<John> 97% of cold calls I make hit voicemail - so I don’t expect you to call me back. But what I will ask is to point you to the email I just sent. Check your inbox or junk for an email from <Alex Elliott> and let me know your thoughts. Otherwise, I’ll try again tomorrow afternoon and see if I can catch you. Thanks”
"Otherwise, I'll try again tomorrow" - quickly proceeds to block harasser's number and email address to head off this threat.
Here’s mine: what do you reckon: “Ben Browning. Resonant. 07789xyz618. Thanks.”
Agreed. I called a new client last night after leaving them a voicemail last week. When I asked if he had a moment for me to explain why I was calling, he recited my voicemail back to me almost word for word… great ice breaker, and meeting booked 👌
So simple mate but very few do it Alex Elliott 👊🏼
Great tip Alex Elliott I will definitely be taking this away - Jessica Sandilands might be good for LD material for you aswel 😉
It always amazes me that people say they don't even bother to leave a VM; what was the point in calling in the first place? Plus, as you say, make it part of your outreach and double up with email for maximum effect. I have always believed this and taught anyone in my teams to do the same.
Totally agree, Alex, and add a voice note, which will amplify the process. We ran a session on this at an event of ours, which was recorded if anyone wants to watch it. You can find it on our Superfast recruitment Youtube channel 👍...its the straightforward consistent stuff that works 👍
I take it deeper… VM, email, and text message… because 90% of the emails end up in a junk folder that’s never opened! I’ve had more positive response rates this way… and some who’ve definitely shat on my parade by telling me off for contacting them 3 ways! 🫣😂
I recently started experimenting with VM. Hit rate is zero. 🧐

2wDo you think we have to say “cold call”? I find it’s rooted in the “me me me” of a sales person vs someone making a call B2B. Why not just say “we’ve not spoken before, feel free to call back if you prefer or, I’ll send you an email now if that’s easier? You can reach me on … if I don’t hear back I’ll give you a call later in the week. To be honest voice mail is a bit like emails. You either diligently listen / read and manage them, or let them pile or like dirty washing 😂
