US Marketing VP @ Reckitt

3 years ago, I moved from France to the United States, and with it came the need to adjust my leadership style. This transition has been a fascinating journey of learning and adaptation. Directness vs. Diplomacy: In France, leaders tend to be more direct, sometimes perceived as ‘harsh.’ This straightforward approach contrasts with the more diplomatic and positive style I’ve encountered in the US. Problem-Focused vs. Solution-Oriented: French leadership often focuses on identifying and addressing problems, which can sometimes come across as negative. On the other hand, American leaders are generally more positive, emphasizing solutions and opportunities. Risk Aversion vs. Opportunity Seizing: Another key difference is in risk tolerance. Americans are adept at spotting opportunities and seizing them, while French leaders tend to be more risk-averse, carefully weighing the potential downsides. Narrative vs. Analysis: Finally, I’ve noticed that Americans often prioritize the narrative and storytelling aspect of leadership, whereas French leaders focus more on detailed analysis and data. Navigating these differences has enriched my leadership approach, blending the best of both worlds to foster a more dynamic and effective team environment. 🌍🤝 What are your thoughts on these leadership styles? #CrossCulturalLeadership #BusinessLeadership #USvsFrance #LeadershipStyles #Adaptability #ProfessionalGrowth

If you can work out how to blend the best of both styles you will be a star mate. Not easy, but a real opportunity that comes with the stretch of working abroad.

This is one of the most insightful posts I’ve recently encountered, Alex. As someone who is American by birth and has not worked abroad, this is helpful information to have and utilize when interacting with French Reckitt colleagues or clients. Apparently I’m a lot more French in my thought processes than I would have thought. 😂 Thank you for sharing!

Super interesting! Although I am not that familiar with the French leadership style, you description of the American one is spot on. Having moved from the US to the Netherlands one year ago, I am going through a ton of learnings also!
