Last year, I went up to the stage in total disbelief as "Kimberly B., of OTC, Inc." was called out and named 2023 Woman-Owned Business of the Year! I had no script written, just pure in-the-moment gratitude. And if you've heard the story, yes, I dropped my phone recording a video to capture who the winner would be, knowing it wouldn't be me! haha This past year has been nothing short of transformative for both myself and our company. We’ve nearly tripled in size!!! We've embraced exciting new challenges while staying true to our mission of solving some of the toughest problems for our war-fighters. And I've been blessed to get to use my platform to speak to and mentor others. And today I get to share the absolute highlight of our recent Small Business Awards... Is the ‘Wet Ingroeiquotum & Streefcijfers’ helping us accelerate towards gender balance in FSI organisations in The Netherlands? Yesterday at Athora Netherlands we had an inspiring event on what is needed to create sustainable change. A couple of highlights for me: 👉🏽 we can see an increase in awareness reflected in more women represented in Executive Boards in data over 2022 - yet the growth seems to stop once it reaches the compliancy of 33% 👉🏽 a lot of organisations have initiatives in place to invite different perspectives in (e.g., trainings or diversity day) to learn from, have a written vision in their strategy and adapt talent policies/processes/systems. 👉🏽 what organisations could do more is rethinking their success principles they have in place. On a 1992 road trip to #Bida, I bought a dusty copy of the 1959 book by #DavidJSchwartz, “The Magic of Thinking Big”, at a petrol station book stand. It sparked my obsession with self-help literature as a young adult, and in particular, the writings of John C. Maxwell. Naturally, I was excited when in c.2003, the incredible oluseyi wright organized a John C. Maxwell event in #Lagos. However, my request for sponsorship was declined by my employer—the event was geared toward executive-level professionals, and I wasn’t considered eligible. Undeterred, I applied for casual leave and covered the cost myself. You should have seen the faces of some of the senior executives when I, a junior banker at the time, took the mic during Q&A with the great John C. Maxwell! The fee was twice my monthly salary, but I knew the investment would be worth it. The courage to speak to a large audience, leadership strategies, and the life-long relationships derived at that conference continue to pay dividends over two decades later. 💡 The entire experience taught me a fundamental truth: to succeed, we must be willing to invest in our own personal development.
